I have my UHF radio head unit in there. The car club uses Channel 7 on GMRS/FRS frequencies. The hand held units seem to eat batteries and are a PITA. This way I never kill the battery and I can talk a good range with the radio.
My rear license plate frame is the antenna, I have a small speaker mounted behind my seat, the microphone is in the center console and I usually get to be "Tail-end-charlie" when the Corvette club does a caravan due to my increased range of signal.

In California the gun must not be available to the driver. It doesn't do much good for self defense in that position. I quit carrying in Calif for that reason.
In Oregon, where I live now, a CCW is easy to get. I don't even carry a gun anymore. In the Chevy I can outrun nearly every car some no count gangsta can get. The richer ones are smarter than that.
Now I am thinking about putting a un-noticed switch in the car so that it'll go about a quarter mile before quitting. That way, in the case of a car jack, they can go, and get far enough away before the car quits and they cannot restart it. There's not much random crime where I live now so it's mostly not an issue. I travel quite a bit in the Chevy, so I never really know where I may go.

Years ago I replaced the stock fuel pump in my '67 roadster with an electric one. I put a shutoff switch in an easy to reach but unnoticeable location.
The fuel in the carburetor will go a few hundred feet, so I would be able to move away from a carjacker.
The earlier question about heat in the dash compartment: I use my iPhone for music and pedometer when I work out, but in case I forget it, I keep an older iPod Touch connected in the compartment. I also play music from it. It's survived two Kentucky summers with no problem.
As for a USB drive, surely you'd keep a backup for it in your computer, and if it were to fail, the drives are cheap now.

GPS Install Finished
Made the mount to secure my GPS in the Cubby.
Compared to my 2014 I had for 3 1/2 years and never used it, this is very functional. In my new 2.5LT Grand Sport I don't have NAV, don't use it that often. Was going to buy a 2 piece mount that went on the passenger grab handle and one part would stay in place, this makes all hidden until needed.
It connects with a short cord from the USB port in the Cubby that turns the unit on and off automatically when the car starts and stops. Been finding it useful when I want to know the speed limit, which is all I miss without NAV compared to my 2014. Just set for MAP. My 5 year old Garmin gets free updates for life and cost about the same as the "inferior" GM NAV update!
Garmin mounts on aluminum plate base with sides that wedge to top to prevent movement over bumps, etc. Works great, just lower screen when needed.

Not really. But since you mentioned the NRA...
But on the topic you brought up, I carry a Kimber .45 UCD II and it is too big to fit in the cubby so when I wish to remove the "lump" for a long drive, I have a holster that hangs under the steering column that holds my .45 quite handily!

When I exit the car, I take the gun from that holster and put in my carry holster.

I'd like to put my phone in there as the center console gets hot as heck and I don't like having the phone out in the cup holder or passenger seat. But it's a tight fit for the phone. Certainly would not be happy if the screen failed up with my phone in there.

Mine has the USB only.
As someone with the holy grail of concealed carry licenses here in Kalifornistan -
I would never put a sidearm in there.
The sidearm should be on your person 100% of the time.
Since Kalifornistan requires listing sidearms on the CCW license:
Light weight - PF9 in 9mm
Medium weight - G33 in 357Sig
Heavy weight - ATI 3" double stack 1911 in 45ACP.
Although now that I think about it - Might not be a bad idea to store a few extra mags in there.
FYI - Carrying a concealed sidearm registered in your name without a permit in Kalifornistan is a misdemeanor. MANY KA counties do not issue CCW.
I also have my AZ non-resident CCW to cover the states most traveled in along the 40 then north to Wisconsin....

So jealous of you folks who live in a 2A friendly state. In NJ it is impossible to get a carry permit. I would love hearing more about what other owners are carrying in their C7 and where they carry it. Maybe we need a separate thread on it. I can dream.

I have nothing back there. I think I opened and closed the screen maybe 3 times since I got the car.

I wanted to put my gun in there for occasional storage, but my carry gun is a Glock 19 and there's *no way* it's going in that tiny compartment, so it just stays on my person at all times.
I've been wondering if there's any empty space inside the dash around that compartment and if it were possible to create a larger replacement back for the box...
