Default oil change

I did a search but couldn't find the answer. My cars oil life says 33%. the sticker from after the first oil change says it should be done at 5600 miles. My car just hit 5600 miles. So do I get it changed or wait for the oil life? If I wait for the oil life that means I could possibly go up to 8k miles on an oil change.

Follow your oil life monitor, it takes useage and calendar time in account. Today's synthetic oils can go well beyond MFR recommendations, so don't worry.

I would wait until the oil life gets to 15% or less. You should get it changed at least once per year no matter the miles or the oil monitor %.

The C7 OLM takes time from last reset into consideration. After 1 year, you will be at 0% even if you put no miles on the car. Just go by the OLM.

Most of the dealers put a sticker on for 3000 Miles or 6 months. I agree with the above posts. Follow the oil life monitor, but not more than a year.

5-10% or 1 year max.

I generally put 4,000 - 5,000 miles per year on my vette, and change the oil/filter once a year, just before putting it away for the winter months.

Follow the OLM. Peel off the sticker and pitch it.

I agree with the others. Wait for OLM to get down to around 15% or so unless it has been an entire year, then change it. Synthetic oil with a quality filter will last 8,000 miles between changes.

Why the 15% remaining change. I let the count down go to "0", then change.

I always follow the same advise, no longer than 1 year.
But what happens to the oil at the 1 year point?

The OLM tells you you should have changed it, and your engine will explode.

According to Blackstone labs, absolutely nothing. I was concerned about condensation mixing with the oil in the crankcase and decomposing into acids, but Blackstone told me that's not really an issue with modern engines.

HTH, and have a good one,

No good reason why I picked 15%. Just being extra careful I guess. Certainly waiting until "0" would be fine also.

The OP didn't say, but I wonder, is there any criteria the GM follows for our free oil services? Does it have to be at a certain percentage, or age, or both?

My guess is nothing with modern engines and synthetic oils. Chevy recommends 2 year oil change intervals with Dexos1 semi-synthetic in the Volt.

Depends on the dealer. Some want you to wait until its needed (I've heard under 20% mentioned a few times), but others could careless and give them all to you back-to-back if you really wanted.

My dealer doesn't care about the OLM. On my 2014 I had my 4 oil changes done before I hit 10,000 miles. I plan to get my 3 free changes on my 17 GS before the 2 year period is up as well. I'll probably have 10,000 miles at the end of 2 years. But some dealers are really sticklers about the OLM being 20% or lower before they will change it. Not sure why since GM reimburses them for the cost.

IMO, Mobile 1 should last at least 1 year, regardless of what the monitor says, unless you do some especially hard driving.

It's simple, follow the Owner's Manual, which for my C6, C7 and my new Grand Sport say change when the OLM says to. In the C7 it also uses time in the algorithm, unlike the C6 which said to change oil when the OLM said OR one year which every occurred first. In fact my '88, '93 Vette and the S-10 truck when between Vettes said the same thing!

With the C7 you don't have to mark your calendar it will count down and read zero life at 12 months after it is reset IF it doesn't define it needs to be changed sooner based on many factors like engine revolutions (better than miles driven) if you make lots of short trips and don't get the oil hot etc. No need to worry what it's doing it's smarter than the dealer!

Thought "stickers" went out accept for folks like Jiffy Lub" who's only business is changing oil!
