Only 460HP!

This again?
Unless we are on a racetrack, you in your GS/Z06/07, Hellkitty, or Demonic rolling chicane, aren't getting anywhere in any applicable faster time.
The limits of driving on the street, where you can't cross yellow lines of death, where you have to account for unexpected gravel in a turn, dictate that you aren't anywhere close to the car's limits where .03g, or 100 Hp is making any difference.

Boys will be boys, for the most part the whole horsepower discussion on the Internet is just another dick measuring contest.

read the web enough and 4-500 hp seems mundane. Its still pretty quick on the st
Not all dyno queens can lay it down either...member recently ran Utahs quickest stick car shooout, 1000rwhp camaro could only lay down an 11. 460hp that gets the mileage it does is pretty impressive, some of ya must be young. wasnt that long ago an honest 400hp was tough to get and miserable to drive.

Only 460 hp, just barely enough to get you to highway speeds in 4 seconds. In 7-8 seconds you can get a real nice ticket.
Yeah, it's neat to say that your car has 800 hp, but where the heck are you going to use it? I enjoy my "only 46 hp" everyday and often get to put a bit of that hp loose out on country roads when there is nothing around. It is enough to get you killed if you aren't paying attention. It is a mine is bigger than yours thing. For some it is enough for others they need more. Kind of what makes us all unique. But one thing is sure...we all love Corvettes.

I agree that my 460 HP '14 Z51 is more then adequate for me, however it sure would have been nice for my '18 GS [built on 06.12] to have a small bump to 500 HP to differentiate it from the Stingray that I currently have.

For me, I can get in plenty of trouble with 460 hp.

If you plan to track the car on a regular basis, you'll want the extra 200hp. If you do mainly street driving and can't find trouble with 460hp then you really don't need the extra. By adding a high performance cold air kit they claim around a 30hp gain which for around $350 is a lot cheaper than going the Z06 route. Considering that so many people have so much money laying around if you are buying from pocket change, go for the Z06 but be sure to go to Spring Mountain and learn how to drive it properly. NASCAR cars didn't have that much power a decade ago. Crashing a new Corvette because it gets away from you would be terrible, well unless you died in it then it wouldn't bother someone much.

Only 460 HP!
In the end, I gave up the extra 200 HP to keep the extra $20,000 in my bank account, and still have an iconic car that has more power on active cylinder management than a lot of cars have with all of their cylinders firing.
And, even though I gave up bragging rights for the 650 HP, I realized it doesn't matter what aspect you talk about, someone else is going to have something bigger or better. So why sweat it?
Keep the Wave!!!!

I enjoy (most of) the comments in these types of threads. We all share the automotive passion, and especially for vettes/sports cars.
And these types of threads underline personal choices and preferences. Mine have changed over time.
Up until about 10 years ago I was drag racing a lot. Had to have the highest hp possible, and purchased many new cars and took the drive trains out and heavily modified them - just like many on this forum. 650hp Firehawk; 500 hp GrandPrix GTX; 600 hp Ford Lightning; 700 hp CTS-V; etc., etc. Broke a lot of stuff too - very understanding wife!
We'd never had a vette, but I fell in love with the styling of the C7. When we purchased our '15 Z51 the Z06 was just about to be introduced. We used the '15 for over 2 years and loved it.
Wife didn't like the color of the '15 and suggested we get a new one. The GS was interesting because we liked the wide body look (again, personal choice), so that's what we bought. Money was not a factor in the decision for us (like many on the forum, we're very fortunate).
So, if I'm a hp junkie that used to drag race a lot and have the $, why wouldn't I get a Z? Contrary to what a few on the forum might think, it's not because 'I don't have a pair'. In addition to dragging newer vehicles, I campaigned SS/D and M/P, and crewed for Stavola Bros. in Winston Cup.
The reason I (personal choice) didn't get a Z is because, even with all the racing in my background, I do not consider the LT1 to be under-powered. The C7, in any configuration, is an extremely capable sports car. If I was drag racing a vette, I'd have purchased a Z. But then, if I really wanted to have another drag car, it wouldn't be a C7.
Perhaps my wife said it best during one of our long road trips in the '15 when I passed 3 cars on a deserted 2 lane road in eastern Washington: "does this thing go as fast from zero to sixty as it does from sixty to one hundred twenty"? Me: "why do you ask"? Her, very calmly: "you hit over one hundred twenty passing those cars. I'd like it better if you kept it under a hundred". I look forward to many more road trips with my sweetie in our GS.

The C7 Z51 ran a 2:53.8 Lightning Lap time (Car & Driver, 4 mile track), the Grand Sport did the same course in like 2:47 or something. That's 7 seconds of differentiation on a 4 mile circuit, which sound pretty substantial to me. What's fascinating about the C7 platform, Z51, GS or Z06, is how the cars outperform far pricier and more powerful, (many of them mid-engine) exotic cars.

Yikes, you're back for more.
It's hardly a "well-guarded trade secret." In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone on this forum who isn't aware that the standard method of measuring HP and TQ is at the flywheel, and that has been the approved engineering standard for many, many decades.
It's the only accurate way to measure engine output only because of variables such as transmission type, powertrain design, etc.
You need a lot more than a calculator. On some vehicles, parasitic drivetrain power loss may be 20% or more, while others may be in the neighborhood of 10%. You need a dyno to calculate WHP, and even those figures vary from dyno to dyno.

Here is what I think. Unless you take your car to the track, the need for gobs of HP is based on your ego and/or your lack of self esteem. Now I do not criticize anyone who buys a car with 600-700-800 HP for a street car only. That is their right and choice. If bragging rights are that important, then so be it. I have had 11 Vettes, (currently a C7 Z51), Viper, Porsches, Ferraris, you name it. All of which are/were strictly street only daily drivers. There is no way I have the ability or desire to take any of my cars to the limit on the street. I owned a C5 & C6 Z06 because I liked the looks of the car. I also owned a C6 Grand sport for the same reason, and was just as happy with that car as i was with the C6 Z06. I had a C6 ZR1 for 2 weeks and thought that for the street, it was almost as crazy stupid as my Viper. I have driven the Turbo S Porsche which is just blazing quick, (quicker than the C7 Z06) and would never want one over a standard 911S. For me, I don't need to drive down the street with 600-800 HP to feel good about myself. But that's just me. To each his/her own.
