I love my Corvettes, but sensible and Corvette should not be used in the same sentence.

I happen to agree with all 5 arguments.

"Sensible" is a relative term

Sensible compared to a hobby of acholism, drug addiction and prostitution/**** addiction

compared to that, my vettes are a great choice.

while all may be "technically" true, the only argument that matters is "I want it."

Uhh, isn't that an oxymoron?

Sensible is a minivan or something.

aren't any more expensive than driving a Silverado or an Impala.
A guy who wants a Silverado is going to look at a Stingray as miss polly practical with the penny instead?

Do all impalas and silverados now require 93 octane gas?

OMG the GM politburo has gone from trying to sell to enthusiasts to convincing the masses that the Corvette is their opiate. Watch for more and more of these Corvettes for the Common Man infotisements as GM tries to move their mountain of unsold units.

"A chicken in every pot and a Corvette in every garage"
"A Corvette is more collectible than a closet full of Beanie Babies"
"If you buy a Corvette you will receive a new family and be loved"
"Every Corvette has a green leaf button to remind us it cares about our planet too"
"Drive a new Corvette to work and you will be promoted"
"Drive a new Corvette to your weekly parole meeting and your officer will have your sentence commuted"
"Give your boy a Corvette to remember you by" (copywriter must have missed the latest season of "Fargo")

Cost wise probably about the same on a year over year basis with maintenance/insurance etc.
BUT - unless you wrap it around a tree, it's undoubtedly better for you, and the FUN factor is just as high

Been sensible, frugal & charitable with $$ all my life so it was finally time to do something that didn't make total sense. My only regret was not doing years ago

I watched my Dad and Mom save and save and save for retirement so they could "have fun" and the moment my dad retired he got health issue on top of Alzheimer's. Instead of "having fun" my dad deteriorated fast over a few years and my mom became a primary care giver. We buried my dad last October. So much for them "having fun" when they retired.

My reason for a vette and all my toys is life is too short, enjoy the moment now since you never know when life will throw you a curve ball. Never assume there is always tomorrow.

Buy it!!

For me the Corvette decision was simple. I'm a car guy and feel like my life is missing something without a fun car to drive. While there are many fun cars available the Vette is faster than stink, looks awesome, is reliable and relatively inexpensive to fix, and it cost a lot less than other performance cars like the Porsche and Ferrari. IMO Porsches are pretty much bulletproof having owned one, but they cost a lot and are not cheap to maintain. As for Ferrari, I guess if you can afford one you don't worry about costs, but most of us can't afford one, so the argument is pointless. Which leads us to the Corvette. Great American engineering, reliability and way fun to drive. Did I mention it is even somewhat practical? My wife and I can get 2 golf bags and a small suitcase in the back and take off for an overnight getaway.

Try that in another sports car. And the money I saved by buying the Corvette can be spent on other, truly important things like my daughters wedding.

I plan on keeping the Corvette forever- I'll let my kids fight for it when I'm gone.

The most dangerous risk of all...the risk of spending your life not doing/having what you want on the bet that you can buy yourself the freedom to do it/have it later.

I went through the list and here is my opinions to each...

1. Disagree. The Vette is a mass produced car and depreciates pretty rapidly (See Porsche). For the most part, if you find a clean older car, it will depreciate to a point and pretty much stop. But, these are certainly NOT good financial investments.

2. Agree. Definitely great bang for the buck!

3. Agree. Low maintenance.

4. Agree. Better on gas than a Hummer.

5. Agree. If you are an enthusiast. We are mostly here.

Coupes offer a lot of storage, Verts not so much (I have had both). So as long as you don't care about going out with others and driving in one car, they are great! Lots of Vette guys have other cars to drive, though, and the Vette is their "toy" for lack of better words.

I agree with your points except to say that your one disagreement misses the point. No car is an investment unless or until it becomes a classic which means it will never be truly enjoyed. The point of that sensible argument was to say that Corvettes don't depreciate to the same degree as most other cars. Relatively speaking.

A well-maintained '98 C5 will still sell for $14k not bad for a 19 going on 20 year old car.

If we were all "sensible" we would view our vehicles like any other appliance and would just all purchase a used Prius.

I have been a Vette fan since I was a kid. Vettes have just always had a coolness factor that no other American car can match.

Still, it's an expense and not an investment, so I needed to justify the purchase to myself. Here’s what I came up with:

1. My work takes me to clients in a 150 mile radius. The C7 in particular is a great long-range cruiser, seats are comfortable, and on the highway gets nearly 30 MPG – Check.

2. It's my weekend hot rod - don't need an additional vehicle for fun – Check.

3. I used to have a motorcycle, now a C7 convertible. While nothing beats a bike for
visceral open road feel, the vert is damn close. I live in Texas so the days with the
top down exceed the days with the top up – Check.

4. My wife digs it - Check.

It's a habit that I always feel I should analyze and justify expenses like this, but the bottom line is that I have bought my current and past Vettes primarily because they were great fun to drive with a performance envelope that puts a smile on my face every time I get in the car. Not to mention that when I picked up my C7 at the NCM I felt like a kid at Christmas - and I hadn't felt like that since I was a kid at Christmas!

And that’s priceless.
