What's a good offer to ask dealer for a 2017 2LT Grand sport? 17%-19% below MSRP?
Hi guys,
I have been lurking here for a long while. Currently own a 99 Corvette. I wanted to upgrade to the new GS bc it's only a few grand more than the z51 and I feel it's worth the extra money.
I found a corvette grand sport I liked. It's 2017 and 2LT. It has the options I want. Now, even couple months ago I saw dealers were doing 11-13% off msrp in the dealer inventory section. But since that discount with z07 and owner loyalty has expired, dealers has been deeply discounting them (as they want to move units). Now I'm starting to see 14-15% off here. Do you think I can make an offer 18% or 19% below msrp? does that sound like a low ball or legitimate offer? In my perfect world, 20% would be great but I'm def. fine with 19%. I'm just nervous I'll be laughed at ... or declined...
Can you guys tell me what you're paying now or what's a good deal at the moment?
Thanks in advance

From what I've seen, 10% seems more likely. That's what I got off mine in the Seattle area and that's what I've seen advertised at some of the larger national dealers. I've also seen plenty of dealer games that make it look like they're giving you a big discount when they're not. For example, they advertise that they're giving a $15,000 discount but that's only from the perspective of them charging $10,000 over msrp as the starting point, so they're really only giving you a $5,000 discount. Sometimes you may also find that part of the discount only applies if you have a trade-in, in which case it's not really a discount since they will be giving you significantly less for the trade-in than if you sold the car yourself.

Call some dealers and then you will know the price. I don't believe what people post here. There is always the part they didn't tell you. Recently I asked a dealer about a Vette and what their discount is. They said "we charge MSRP, what price are you looking for". I said 10% off. They never called back. So some dealers don't want to sell the cars.

Check out what the larger forum dealerships are offering, i.e., Kerbeck, McMulkin, Criswell, etc., and that will give you a general idea. While there might be better offers, the larger volume dealers' discounts are "generally" hard to beat.
I could be wrong, but I have not seen discounts as steep as 19-20% on '17 GSs. GL.

But if you are set on a GS, then you will either need to wait 3-5 months for the best deal or pay a little more and enjoy the car during the best driving months

There's not that much market up in the car. The steep discounts are driven by GM incentives. If the dealer is very close to a volume insensitive he maybe willing to make such a deal, because he would make his money on the" back end". Dealers many times are more flexible on cars that have been on the lot the longest( 90+ days).

When I bought my 16' Z in 9/16, I got 19%... now that was driven w/ dealers having an incentive from GM to "tag" a car for an additional 10%.
Dealerships DON'T have 19% markup in the cars... they have about 8-10% depending on the options and how far the dealer is willing to go (i.e. floorplan and holdback).
I'd suggest that if you get 10% off w/ current incentives you did well.. Anything above that consider a win!

Your avatar doesn't look reflect somebody that would be nervous if he's laughed at ... or declined! Come on man, make the offer that you're comfortable with and let the dealer respond. All they can (will) do is counter with a number they'd like to get. It's an iterative process so don't open with your best offer - - just like they won't counter with their best offer. (Have you ever played poker?).
BTW, you don't say whether you're trading in your '99. If you are, then it's a whole new ballgame as it is obviously the net number that matters. As pointed out in a prior post, the dealer can give you a great price on the new car and really hose you on the trade-in. You need to do research on both ends of the deal to try and figure out what the overall best net price is. If you can reach a deal that is fair and reasonable, and that fits your budget, etc., then do it. Otherwise be prepared to walk. I've had more than one dealer chase me into the parking lot to try and save a sale.
While it is definitely a buyer's market at this point in the C7 cycle, if you've found the car you really like, from a dealer you're comfortable working with (for service, etc. after the sale), then that should be worth something in terms of what you're willing to pay. Don't get fixated on just paying 19% or 20% off MSRP.

I think that's a bit unrealistic, sorry to say.
I had around 16% off and this was August last year when the Grand Sport orders were about to begin. The car was red tagged too. So, without that incentive I don't think dealers have that to give you, but i'm not shopping this year so I have no idea what GS's are getting discounted to. I hope you do find something with that much off. Good luck!

I'm just guessing but I think the closer we get to the plant closing discounts will be smaller..

As expected, Grand Sports are going for somewhat smaller discounts then they did a few months ago since you'll wait months for a 2018. Or Kerbeck has one 2018 in stock at a 4.7% discount!
The 2017's are going for 11.8% off.
You can ask for anything! But bet you won't get even 16% from anyone, even where their bank is pressing for money!! Perhaps if you wait until the 2018s are plentiful, those remaining cars will get a deeper discount. That might be in October. However they will be "remaining" because of color, etc or they are 3LT's equipment with every option!

Looking on MacMulkin's site, they have some 17 GSs for about 15% off MSRP. They had the best price when I bought my Stingray.
I checked with my local dealer and it's like he said, the volume dealers will have the best price. I was at 17% below MSRP through MacMulkin and he was only able to go about 7% below. Said he used to be at a dealership in Myrtle Beach where it was always MSRP.

WADR, you've been on here about 4 years, lurking for quite awhile, know some of the facts of car prices and yet you leave us with so little info. Where are you? Are you talking to local dealers only? What have they said are you hesitant to be laughed out of the dealership? Why? It's a negotiation, not an attack on your manhood. Since you've been lurking, surely you've seen some of the prices discussed on here---have you looked at any of the Forum vendors' websites? their ads? their entire section devoted to dealers? Do you know that the model year, '17 is over---no more being produced? That means, the longer you wait to make a choice, decision to buy, the less the selection will be.
If you came on here just to ask a simple question, anyone can give you their answer: yes, no. Yes, you can get 19% off; no, you won't get 19% off. Come on, make it a little easier to give you some guidance.

You're not going to get the same steep discounts on GS and Z06 as you do on the Stingray.
I don't even know why the Stingray exists. They should all just be widebody. Give the Z51 vs not Z51, mag ride, base, Z51, 6 piston and Z07 brake options, etc on the widebody "base" car.
(actually, it should just be base, 6 piston and carbon brake options. Z51 is kinda silly).
edit: I'm not sure who would want narrower tires, but you could even offer narrower tires + more offset (and no wheel spats) if you wanted, too. Narrow body just makes no sense.

For what it's worth, I was able to get a bit more than 10% off MSRP on a custom order 2018, though granted it's a Z51 Stingray. I don't get a feeling that what I ordered would have made a major difference in the percentage off though.
If you are taking a 2017 off the lot, I would expect more discount. If they aren't willing to play ball consider a chat with Mike Furman at Criswell to see what he might be able to do for you -- great experience so far!
The one wild card might be the factory shutdown -- we're past the order deadline for pre-shutdown, so I wonder if that might push up the price of available cars a bit for folks who don't want to wait.

You can probably get a 2017 GS for 17-19% off in September or October - it will be one of those handful of cars no one wants to buy: an A8 3LT in Black Rose with the gray interior and chrome wheels or the two Sterling Blue cars Kerbeck has had since January.
Right now the big dealer are at 13-15% off for 2017's an 10-11% for 2018's. I don't expect it will go up unless GM puts money on them.

Les Stanford in MI had some incredible deals defined in the Dealer Inventory section. A number of cars were marked down to $4,000 BELOW GM Employee price. Whether they have the exact car you desire is worth looking into. They usually have 100s of new Corvettes in stock.
