Totally weird. Rear window shattered.
OK car is parked on my sister's driveway in NOVA. Safe neighborhood, they have never had any problems. Their Audi and Odyssey are parked right next to the Vette.
I wake up and find this.
Happened around 2 AM at night. My sister heard the alarm go off, went to the window and didn't see anyone. Neighbor this morning confirmed that they heard the alarm as well around the same time.
Looks like a break-in attempt right? What's weird is there is absolutely no marks elsewhere in the car -doors and door lock/handle area show no signs that someone tried to get in and no scratches or scuffs anywhere else. Literally, it seems like someone walked up to car and tried to pry the rear windscreen off, and when they couldn't, alarm went off, so they ran off.
That just sounds weird. I'm no car theft expert, but prying the rear glass isn't where I would go first if I was trying to steal a car. Anyway, I have zero deductible glass coverage and already made an appointment with SafeLite tomorrow morning at 8 AM. Anything I need to be on the lookout for when they replace the rear glass as far as trim or defroster install etc.?

Could be if you're near a flightpath that it was a piece of ice off an airplane. If someone wanted to break into your car why would they break that window in that spot? Much easier to do the side window. Just saying.

None of the other cars on the driveway had any issues though.

I looked pretty hard for errant golf *****, bullets, etc., but couldn't find anything.
Asking around, somebody said that an associate who worked in glass manufacturing said that magnesium contamination was rumored to cause spontaneous failures.

Yes. Stress cracks and fractures are actually quite common Google it. Have had it happen to house windows as well. Even covered under mfr warranty if you can see the crack runs t9 the edge of glass which in the OP case is a moot point. The side and rear windows shatter like that as a safety precaution. But that inhibits someone's ability to diagnose why.
get it fixed and move on.

This same thing happened to the rear window on my 86 Trans Am many years ago. I was living in Ft. Lauderdale at the time. I had just driven the car for about 2-3 minutes from my apartment to a local supermarket and parked it in the lot. About 30 seconds after going in the store, I heard my license tag called out over the PA system so I ran out to my car. The rear window had completely exploded and the remaining hatch had been blown back about an inch from the resulting force, pulling it out of the latch. Several people told me they heard the explosion from across the parking lot and no one was near my car when it happened.
Apparently, the hot summer South Florida sun had heated the glass, I had run the A/C for a few minutes driving to the store, and then the sun heated the glass again while the car sat in the lot. The pressure differential it created due to the temp differences inside and outside the car sucked the window into the cooler interior. Most of the glass ended up inside the car. My T/A was about 4 years old when this happened.
I still have the hard-copy pics I took for the insurance company back then.
Blew the hatch back over an inch.

Yes, and really hot or really cold temperatures make it more likely. In Michigan a classic case is when it's extremely cold outside and someone turns on their rear defroster and the rear window shatters from the big change in temperature. Again, the glass guy probably will have an idea.

It could be from the heat as I don't see any pry marks that would show if someone tried to pry it off. Kinda odd though.

I've read lots of instances of the sunroof breaking, especially on my Ford daily driver. It hasn't happened to me yet, but I think it happens more frequently than people realize.

On a side note do some research on safelite. Ill let you make your own decision but I would be getting it done at the dealer with OEM parts. I wouldn't let them touch my 2006 Camry.

This looks and sounds similar to my episode, but my car was shaded inside a garage and the air temp as about 80 degrees.
One thing I didn't mention was that I had an air compressor running in the garage, so maybe there was a sympathetic frequency thing going on.

I'm thinking falling object....
My neighborhood is considered "safe" but some early 4th celebrant nimrods in surrounding neighborhoods have been cranking off a round or 10 into the air at all odd hours...
they gotta land somewhere. (yea, they sound different than fireworks)

I've had rear car windows shatter for no apparent reason. Looks like yours must have had some pressure at the corner. Tempered glass is very weak on the edges despite it's great strength directly.

Is it Memorex, or is it live?

Something could have struck the glass and shattered it. A BB would easily do it. Still sucks though. Hopefully there's was no paint damage from the glass shattering.
