The "A" in the newly branded M1-113A stands for Annual Protection. They are guaranteed for annual protection when used with annual protection oil.

I would be willing to bet there is little to no difference between the 113 and the 113A other than a new sticker on the filter and new box that the filter comes in. Mobil has rebranded every one of their filters with the "A". Mobil does say that there is an "upgrade" in internal components to ensure the annual guarantee.

From the Mobil website (regarding the "A" filter):

1. Upgraded performance – Structural components in the filter have been upgraded to help provide even longer-lasting protection.
2. Increased protection – The Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter now guarantees protection for one year or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first, and meets the requirements of the Mobil 1™ Annual Protection motor oil limited warranty.
3. New packaging – The Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter packaging has changed to be consistent with the appearance of Mobil 1 Annual Protection motor oil.

Did the specs say what the bypass valve pressure was? That seems to be the main focus of this thread.
However, it does make me wonder if AC Delco had to raise the bypass pressure because their filters are less efficient, or because the variable volume oil pumps require it? The variable pumps may be able to compensate for increase pressure drop and can still get the oil to the engine without bypassing.

given that the bulletin shows you can interchange the upf64r with a pf64 should be all the proof you need at the low pressure relief spring is the same it's just a better quality filter with an anti drain back and better sealing ring for higher Temps.

The Mobil 1 filter is constructed a little bit better then the UPF 64R butt they built the upf64r to GM AC Delco spec how they wanted to do it which probably save them a couple pennies for each oil filter therefore it has a bit lesser quality components but it's still above the non upfr series

You can see the base mounted bypass valve spring in the PF64, and I cannot see anything in the PF64R? There is also some debate on whether it is better to have the bypass at the base of the filter or on the other end so it does not pass as much debris when it does bypass.

I looked this morning but couldn't seem to find what it's rated at. I did see the M1-113A filter is rated 99+% efficient @ >30 microns.

I found the Fram Ultra Synthetic (my current other favorite oil filter) bypass is rated at 9-12 psi. The regular Wix and Wix XP are 12 psi.

It appears that none of these aftermarket filters are anywhere near the 22 psi of the ACD PF64.

I just emailed Mobil's technical support so we'll see what they respond with.

On the M1-113a box it also says....

"All new car warranties remain in effect when Mobil 1 oil filters are used for vehicles covered by a warranty. Follow the vehicle's oil life sensor or oil change interval recommendation in the owner's manual. See product for country of origin marking."

M1-113 says...

"All new car warranties remain in effect when Mobil 1 oil filters are used. Follow your vehicle manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals"

The box of the M1-113a says "Protects for up to 1 year or 20,000miles whichever comes first. The box for the M1-113 says ""Up to 15,000 miles of Guaranteed protection when combined with Fully Synthetic Motor Oils".

The 2017 Corvette owner's manual says to change the oil and filter every 7,500 miles, if needed.

Thanks for asking the source.

I called the Mobil Oil Filter Hotline a month or so ago. It is answered by Champion Labs who manufactures the Mobil 1 and PF64 filters. The bypass rating at that time for the M1-113 was 17 psi and the PF64 22 psi according to their tests. I did not ask about the M1-113a as I had not seen that designation at the time.

As to the statement by 16/C7Z that Mobil produces the UPF, that is not true because Mobil does not make filters. The UPF is likely manufactured by Champion Labs who makes the Mobil 1 filters.

Champion Labs was very willing to discuss details when I spoke with them.

The Mobil 1 and PF64 both meet the GM minimum bypass specification of 15 psi while the PF64 is higher than the minimum at 22 psi.

The Wix and Fram as stated in a recent post apparently do not meet the specification as they are rated at 12 psi.

That pretty well answers the question as if Mobil1 filter meets GM specs and that they can't refuse to honor their warranty.

Since I believe that the Mobil1 oil filter is a better filter than the ACDelco PF series filters, I will continue to use them on my LS7.

Thank you for sharing!
This pretty much answers things, and makes me comfortable continuing to use the M1-113 in my C7.

I have used WIX in the past, but their specs show only 12 PSI, so it does not even meet the minimum of 15.
There again, it may be the WIX is more efficient and can still flow the required amount with less pressure drop.

Looks like I can use my remaining stock of M1-113 that I was using for my ZL1

Side note;
Dorman 097-119 Oil Drain Plug Gasket (sub for GM 12616850)
$.79 at O-Reilly's, but since Auto Zone was closer, I went there and they price matched (reg. price $1.19)
Maybe other Auto Parts Houses have a price match policy too...

My reason for using the AC PF64 Delco that comes with the C7, has noting to do with it meeting specs or being a better filter. Let's assume for this post Mobil (who doesn't make filters) has a somewhat better filter. In fact it may be better and since your LS7 is past warranty, why not use it.

What I referenced is the car mag (perhaps it was Car & Driver) that had a C7 engine failure during a test that was attributed by GM to an oil filter failure. It was the original OEM PF64. Also some years ago there was an engine failure attributed to a Fram filter discussed in detail on the Forum.

My premise is, if the unlikely occurance of an engine failure due to a PF64 DELCO filter, GM would still have to cover the failed engine while my Grand Sport is covered on warranty. If the failure was clearly attributed to a failed Mobil, Fram etc filter GM could not be expected to cover the engine failure regardless of it "meeting" a GM spec but was defective. "'Just Say'n."

Don't get me wrong, I think most filters are just fine and filter the oil as much as I need. I change it each year in my Street Rod with few miles and use a Fram filter. In fact Fram is the only one I found with a filter short enough to fit with the long tube Sanderson headers in that 8.2 Liter BB!

I received a response from ChampLabs this afternoon with good news. The M1-113A filter uses a 22psi bypass valve, which is the same as the OEM ACD PF64.

Seems like last time I looked at a Mobil 1 filter, the bypass was in the top of the filter (not the base like the PF64), but I guess if the pressure is high enough it may never bypass..
The debate is whether the base mounted bypass helps minimize crud released to the engine in the event it does bypass.

Do you have a schematic of the filters to validate what you are saying? Since they are both made by Champion Labs, I would guess, and it is a guess, that the construction is very similar with differences possibly in filter material, gasket material or other nuances to meet the specification of Mobil or AC Delco. The box the M1-113A came in that I purchased this morning showed the anti-drain-back at the top, but it did not show the baypass.

I have both the M1-113 and the M1-113a in my basement. I can't tell that there is any difference(a slightly stronger coil spring isn't easily seen by the naked eye) in the bypass spring. Both have the same identical construction. Anti-drain back on top and the bypass on the bottom. Same endplate, same inner steel tube, etc.
