I received a response from ChampLabs this afternoon with good news. The M1-113A filter uses a 22psi bypass valve, which is the same as the OEM ACD PF64.
My guess wasn't to far off after all when I suggested in post #36 that the difference between the M1-113 and the M1-113a might be the cracking pressure of the bypass valve.
Mobil made it a point to say that their M1-113a oil filer met the car manufacturer's specifications(thus stand up under a warranty question).
If the car manufacturer's(GM in this instances) change the spec on the bypass valve, then it makes sense that Mobil would follow suit with their oil filters or lose that business.
Sorry to bring up this old thread, but wondering what size oil filter tool (the end cap that you can use to torque the filter properly) fits the PF64? Looks like they are measured by mm.
I just use a strap or adjustable wrench type filter tool with teeth. It doesn't matter if you damage the one you're taking off. Use your hands to tighten the new one, not a wrench.

I use one that fits the bottom of the filter. It allows you to use a 3/8 ratchet wrench. If you want one like that, suggest when you buy the filter at an autoparts store, just check the sizes available and buy one.
However, the first time I changed oil in my 2014 Z51, thought why not try their torque recommendation. Tried to tighten to the the spec in the Owner's Manual. Before I reached as I recall the 22 ft-lbs felt too tight! It would have distorted the rubber gasket! Backed off and did what I have done for 50 years, 3/4 turn after the gasket touches! Oil the gasket with your clean finger with what is on top from that used to partially fill the new filter!
Notice in the 2017 Owner's Manual it says turn 3/4 to 1 turn after the gasket touches! Suggest NOT going by torque!

I have always used the AC Delco filters, but the last two I have bought (one for my C5 and one for my ‘15 Impala) have not sealed well against the motor and have leaked. For my next oil changes, I will be using something else.
I got my cap filter wrench from O'Reilly. It's Pennzoil brand, but I don't remember the size. I grabbed a Mobil M1-113 off the shelf and found the one that fit best.

Those ones that fit on the end of the filter are awesome, I have a bunch of them in different sizes for all the vehicles I've changed oil on over the past few decades and they work amazing.
I also only tighten the new filters hand tight, and have never had one leak on me.
I always used the long truck filter, PF-34 because of the greater filter surface. It didn't stick down any lower than the oil pan so that wasn't a problem.

That is the reason I quit using ACDelco filters years ago and went to WIX, but now I read that the bypass pressure is not high enough on many brands, so I was thinking about going back to ACDelco. (at least until others meet the same specs)
I may have to re-think that...
When I had a problem with ACDelco's not sealing, I thought that it was because they started making the end plate so thin that it was flexing and not stiff enough to keep pressure on the gasket... I thought they improved the design , but maybe not..
As previously owning/operating a chain of auto parts stores, I've literally sold thousands of oil filters of various brands including AC/Delco and don't remember ever having issue with any.
I've always only used AC/Delco oil/fuel/air filters on my Corvettes as if it's good enough for the manufacturer it's good enough for me and I like to keep them as original as possible.
The truth is that if you change your oil according to manufacturer's specifications using any of the reputable filter manufacturer's product you are just about assured not to have an oil filter related issue.
As far as filter magnets go, if you've got enough steel debris in the filter that you need a magnet to pull it to the side of the filter can to keep from clogging the filter media you've got much bigger problems.
I believe the purpose of a filter magnet is to catch metallic particles that are smaller than the micron rating of the filter media.

Wix just released a brand new filter that has the 22psi bypass valve in it, the part number is WL10290. There is also a new NAPA Gold filter also with the right bypass valve, it's part number 100290. They are so new that stores won't have them just yet, but hopefully will be in stock very soon.

Toured the large WIX factory in our area a few years ago. They make filters, oil and air, in a highly automated assembly line for many brands. I recall NAPA etc at the time.
Since it's my area of interest was surprised for some oil filters that have a nut at the bottom just for tightening during the install, they had two automated lasers joining the nut to the sheet metal case!
Another factor is the flow rating for the filters. For the older engines, the PF46E is only rated at 3gph flow. The equivalent Wix 51042 for those engines flows 9 to 11 ghp. Even the stock oil pump pushes more than 3gph at cruising speeds, so the PF46E is marginal at best for those engines.
On the newer engines with the newer filters, it's better. The PF64 is rated at 7.9gph, which is respectable. The Wix equivalent 57060 is rated at 10-12 gph. I can't find full specs on the new WL10290XP filter from Wix. I would expect it to be better than the AC-Delco as well, but I have no data to back that up.
Jerry makes the most salient point over and over throughout this long thread, and I think a lot of folks are missing his very important point.
It's really not an issue of whether the PF64 is a better filter or not, it's a matter of eliminating hassles and delays w/ GM should one suffer the unfortunate circumstance of a broken engine. It makes no sense to me to buck manufacturer recommendations to save a few pennies or because you think you know better. PF64 will go on my LT1 every time.
Sure, you might prevail w/ another filter and have your warranty honored, but why even allow questions to even be asked?

Agree about the 22ft-lbs filter seeming excessive.
I've always torqued the drain plug *and* oil filter to 18ft-lbs (216 inch-pounds; I use my smaller inch-lbs wrench since my "full size" ft-lb wrench doesn't go below 25ft-lbs).
I *know* the "3/4 turn past contact" works and would be good enough. However, my OCD doesn't bug me as much if I use a torque wrench.
