I used to turn the nozzle upside down to help with this, but I don't any longer - - one time it didn't shut off and pumped gas all over the side of my C7 (and this was after successfully using the 'upside down method' for probably 20 fill ups). Luckily I was there and shut it off manually, but I got gas on my pants and shoes too.
Just a word of caution - if you do the upside down method, make sure you stick around and don't leave it.

My 3 month old Grand Sport appears to be following what occurred with my September 2013 built C7. About 20% of the time it shuts off. I turn the nozzle 90 degrees CCW and hold the handle on full- all is fine. It has always shut off. I'll continue that practice of holding the nozzle when needed, NBD.
A forum poster who knew gas pump nozzle shut off operation defined why some are not set properly and can cause the issue.

Never been an issue with my fair weather driven, low mile, highly waxed C5 Vert but I have had issues with trying to determine the best leaf blower to dry the car with.
It doesn't see rain so I only wash it once a year to get the fingerprints off but the thought of a towel touching it makes me cringe.
As for your problem regarding gas, maybe let your husband fill it up next time

Due to an improper seal between the pump and the gas tank opening, I can never set the pump to auto. It goes for 5 seconds or so then releases.
The solution was to turn the pump hand almost upside down and rest it on the gas door. Fills automatically every time now. I guess that either improves the seal or removes the effect of not having a proper seal.

He's in CA, where they have vapor recovery systems on their pumps. If the pump foreskin doesn't get pushed back far enough, they shut off. It's difficult to get the nozzle pushed in enough on some cars due to the filler placement.
