I don't think anyone took the car for a joyride. The tire store had it for less than an hour, and the odometer reading was the same as when I dropped it off.
No way for anyone to stop on the Interstate to pick up the roof in moderate-to-heavy traffic if it were in the roadway.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who is surprised to hear the tire dealer talking about loosening the roof to relieve stress on the frame. Weird.

Were there any trees around when your roof flew off. Might be hanging in a branch.

This is true. When Chevrolet was doing work on my transmission they had the car on a lift for several days with the hood up trunk lid up and the roof completely off and both doors cracked open. When I asked I was told this was done to relieve frame stress and was a GM directive when on certain types of lifts.

My last set from Discount tire, that's what they did, told me they always open doors, hood, back hatch and unlatch roof panel. Sounded strange to me but I was there the whole time and checked the roof latches when they were done. By the way went back three times to get the balance right, after the third time I gave up and took it to Kauffman tire, they did it right the first time. No more discount tire, way over rated.

I find it strange that someone could hop in their car without knowing that the roof was unlatched. Looking out the rear view you can clearly see that the rear latch isn't in the upright position.

A local shop here had the doors open, hood and hatch... I asked why would you do that? It's policy so none of the panels get out of alignment".... I chuckled and said Just don't mess it up thinking you are doing something right when you are completely wrong.... Either way would be fine, just found it odd...

Discount never has removed my roof, granted they only saw my C6, my C7 hasn't needed tires yet. So that is a weird story, maybe a local thing?
They also never open anything else on my car.

We've used about six different Discount Tires stores around the country over the last 16 years, several of them wanted to open the door and hood before jacking the car. The ghost of the "Flexible Flyer" C4 lives on...
AFAIK, none of them wanted to loosen the roof.

The only precaution I'm aware of on recent models is to lower the windows on the C5. The dealer I purchased mine from had several instances where they blew out door windows when raising on a lift. Don't know about the C6 or C7.
Also, I can understand removing the roof, but just loosening the clamps and leaving it in place? Seems to me the risk of damage is still there if the frame was to flex that much. I need to remember to check mine whenever I have it serviced.
