I have both tops on my C7. Love the transparent one the most as it makes the interior open up a bit, painted top looks very cool on the car. Probably DO NOT need both but hey its a Corvette so you have to have all the options and toys!
My 2009 had the 2 top option...I bought off the dealer lot. I never used the solid top because I liked the transparent so well. I even bought a bag for the solid top and it hung on my garage wall until I traded it for my 2014. Next guy got a never used solid top.
I did not want a transparent top, I had one for my C5 and it was very hot on sunny days and the roof checked badly over the years even though it was always garaged.
No. I did on my C5. I used it only a small handful of times in 14 years. It spent almost all of the time in a spare room closet wrapped in a blanket. IMO having a second top is mostly useless.
I ordered my car with just the body colored roof. 6 months later I bought the transparent roof and have never changed since then.
In my opinion make the interior much brighter and open feeling.
I have both tops, but the transparent top is the one that's mostly on the car. I live in Florida and have no problems with the transparent top in the sun. I got a headliner with suction cups to install when the sun is too bright and hot, but rarely have used it:
I also really like the transparent top for the track. Without a headliner it gives me 1-1/2 to 2 inches more headroom for clearance of my helmet.

I have one top. In almost 3 years of ownership it has been off exactly once, that is only because the guy replacing the windshield (original took a nasty rock strike) needed it off to swap the windshield.
