Uniden has dropped (2) of the most jaw dropping range and overall performance winning detectors the R1 (no GPS $299) and the R3 (edited I had originally R2...sorry) (w/ GPS $399)...don’t take my word for it....read. I think I paid $649 for my Max 360. One difference between the Max and the R3 (other than $240 bucks) is the “Arrows” they basically stole from the V1 (Valentine) when their patent lapsed. Escort’s Redline is known for it amazing sensitivity at long distances, however it had a mono display and NO GPS. Welcome the new and improved Redline “EX” ($599) I’ll give you 2 guesses on what those were Color Display and GPS...shocker. Oddly enough the reviews say it does not perform as well as the OLD unit... bet that is going over well at Escort...
Look I do not profess to know everything about the other top performing models like the Valentine V1 which to date still does not have GPS capability that I know of built in (I think you have to pay for an app and run it on your phone. I am sure some of your guys out there have some info to share on that ... not trying to push one over the other ... I can tell you one huge *** demon is sitting on my shoulder telling me to grab the R3 and push the protection out further, it smokes the Max 360 in sooo many areas But... I like the “Smart Cord”.. being able to reach up and mark a false signal coming from Blind Spot Mons and God knows what else..I love those damn arrows!! Once I get a hit I can tell where this-guy is coming from and by the strength ..how far. I like the (3) diferent display modes and the fact that you can identify the threats by their frequency, each band a different color Knowing for sure if it is real or otherwise. I like that you can make any adjustments to the detector thru an App (Lord knows to do it on the unit is a PIA)
Sorry for the rant...sharing my experience for those interested.
Radar detector? MEH How about radar and laser jammers!

Beltronics RX65. 22+ tickets avoided because of this detector. Accurate and really picks up police radar at insane distances. If the alarm sounds hit the brakes!

Yes, you can pay way more and get more features. The only feature I care about is avoiding tickets

I've paid to update my V1 and all it does is go beep and still has no GPS. A total upgrade is what the V1 needs.

And I still think that lasers have to be stationary but if you have something that says otherwise I would love to see it.

Escort/Beltronic make detectors which are built-in and they claim immunity to the Spectre radar detector detector.

I actually saw an ad once for a radar detector detector detector but can't find it any more. I would be interested in buying one.

Anyway the Escort/Beltronic built-in detectors are VERY expensive to buy and expensive to install. And any new detector I get I would also like the arrows on it as they can be useful though the left and right arrows are really the same thing, just telling you the source of the radar is on your left or right but you don't know which, at least on the V1 that is true.

If it's still doing the job, keep what you have and spend the money elsewhere. I was getting by fine on my 9500ix, but am up to 4 vehicles now and wanted the SO to have a detector just in case. That was my excuse for getting the R3.

The R3 is a noticeable improvement though. Off-axis performance is better, 35.5 Ka performance is better, and it can be set up to be a quieter detector without doing lockouts or excessive filtering (even though you can still do both).

Range seems to be better as well, although around here the 9500ix picks up the county cars like a mile away. The main range improvement I noticed is being able to pick up a LEO facing the other way on the other side of a hill. The 9500ix wouldn't alert me until I was at the top of the same hill.

Thanks.
IIRC, the original radar detector detector was called the VG2, though there are probably newer versions. Like the Spectre?
Officially, I was told they were only for sale to police departments. But with enough money or the right connections, you can buy anything.
There was considerable difference in how "visible" different detectors were, some could be found at long distances and others you were safe to within a few feet.

I have two.

I drive in VA and DC all the time, and I need 100% stealth, and this is still the only one. I'll put up with unsurpassed range and false alerts for this.

The new Unidens are also undetectable by Spectre Elite.

Kinda pissed about the MAX360. It's been a bust and the new firmware update has done nothing to change my opinion. Been considering selling and picking up an R3.

Is the R3 plug and play ?
I know it can be adjusted to do this and not that .
I want a simple to use unit . Turn it on and forget .
But with little false alarms . Looks like the max 360
Is better at this ?

It comes set up pretty well out of the box. It's easy to change settings though (two buttons on the front do the job), and it's easy enough to read.

I haven't used the Max 360, but the 9500ix was a little less intuitive to change things around on the detector itself from what I remember. I used the app to do that though.

I went with the new Escort iX. Smaller and lighter than the 360 unit. Excellent performance. Had it hard wired without taping into the mirror to avoid issues. I love the magnet mount for easy removal and install, like others have stated. I customized the settings, which is very easy to do and intuitive. $499 retail but love this detector. No tickets in a year and plenty of warnings far in advance and with my customized settings I do not get false alarms. Very well worth it.

Looking at seriously getting a R3 (waiting for the Blendmount adapter really) because it looks like a GPS enabled version of the old Redline.
I also love my dependable old red line, it has a very long range detection, my only bother is that is not technology updated and keeps detecting the proximity sensor in some new cars, that's my only concern, the rest is great!. No tickets since I own it.

Yes it’s very easy to set up. I just went through the menu and turned on the filters I wanted as they are off buy default.

In regards to the gps marking alarms that you know are garbage. The escort takes 3 passes to log it into memory, with the R3 you press mute once then hit mute again and it is stored. I prefer this method as opposed to marking the locations. Yes I like the escort methods better for local driving as my old 9500ix had pretty much every alarm in 200 miles stored ( now my son has it), but honestly on trips it makes no difference as i’m Not usually passing the alarm 3 time for it to store. Plus R3 has much better filtering thus much less garbage to store.

Great choice! Have you been keeping up with the latest reports of beta firmware testing with the Radenso Pro M-edition? When that gets finalized and ported over to the RPSE, you should have an even better detector with better BSM filtering too!

Ooh man.. that's like asking what's the BEST car, as if there's one singular car that's universally the best for everyone in all driving situations. Fortunately we have lots of great choices that meet different needs and pricepoints.

IMHO the sweet spot these days is the Uniden R3. Best performance available at any price, excellent false alert filtering, red light camera alerts, it's regularly updated with features requested by users, and it has a very reasonable pricetag.

The Max360 is a popular choice because while it doesn't offer the all out range of the R3, it's still pretty good, plus it adds arrows to help locate the threat, bluetooth integration to pair with your phone for easier programming and realtime alert sharing with other drivers, and some of the filtering features are more automatic, but it's also physically larger and more expensive.

Then you can get into custom installed remote mount detectors that pair with a set of laser jammers. The upcoming Radenso RC-M and Net Radar are two strong contenders, along with the new Escort Max Ci 360, but you have to use Escort's laser jammers with it unfortunately. Remotes are a whole 'nother can of worms. They're more expensive and require professional installation, but you get a much cleaner and hidden install in the end.

I've put together a guide on my website covering the best radar detectors on the market. Take a look at that and it can help you make a decision.

I put mine down low on the windshield with the suction cups. Works great there.

Uniden R3 is amazing. Just got mine last month and it's already saved me 4 times. Just plug and play. I run it in HWY mode as it is the most sensitive.
