Default Engine air filter..was I ripped off?

While having her checked out for a separate issue at the dealer, figured I have them replace the air filter. I thought I read that it was a PITA to replace.

Uhmmmm...it was $119.

You may now flog me

How many miles on it? They are very poor filters for Air flow.
Just a better filter adds power. For the same or less money.
Lesson learned!

It sort of is a PITA to replace (removing is easy, but getting the assembly back together is not so simple), so no flogging from me, but it was worth the DIY to save a bunch of money.

There are a lot things that I will do, and a lot of things I will not, so I will never say you are an *** for not doing any given job on these cars.

(except changing the cabin air filter) I hate to imagine what they charge for that.

He said it was no labor...part only. Wow.

29,000 miles. No clue if it was changed before I owned it. Bought her at 15,000 miles last year.

Look up the BMS air filter or if you want to go oiled look at the green air filter.

Do you have to clean and re-oil the green one?

Default DIY as part of detailing

I wanted to get my new to me '15 to "known" status on things so changed the air and cabin filters at 8k miles. PITA to remove/replace as owc6 noted, but I did it to allow me to detail nooks and crannys that were under the filter duct/box..... made it a bit more "fun".... smile.

BTW, air cabin filter was far harder than it should have been but found remnants of a "mouse nest" in it (previously posted pictures in a different thread) as the previous owner hardly driven the vehicle and it was in a 10 car garage..... guess he had mice!!

If you are not a DIY person, was money well spent for you.... your money your choices.

BTW... I picked up my genuine GM air filter on Big A for $48.17.... now it is more expensive for some reason, but here is link anyway.....LK

The OE filter appears to be poorly made,In Thailand.

I compared ( see pic from L to R)the BMS.OE & K&N.

I chose the BMS.The overall quality seemed to be better and the pleats were more uniform.

Ahhhh, yea those look nice. Well, OEM will do for now. I’ve barely had time to wash her let alone dissemble something I haven’t done before. Next filter change I’ll do it.

I prefer to stay with the stock type filter, but I did buy a WIX brand for $50 instead of $120 for Delco.
Some of the oiled aftermarket filters start out with less pressure drop, but they can also let more dirt pass through and get dirty quicker, so over time, they become more restrictive than the stock paper filter.

I pulled mine out to clean it after driving through a very serious sand storm on my way to vegas. A bit of a pain to remove it. Interestingly, though, the filter was surprisingly clean. It was a waste of my time. Had about 14k miles at the time.

The OEM ACDelco filter is $46, and WIX a dollar more, from RockAuto.com if anyone cares.

Dealers will always mark up filters. About 30k is right.
