Oil changed service report and dealer can't tell me
I'm looking through my service reports and it's saying Dexos 88865720. I don't know if this is a full synthetic or what weight oil it is, since it doesn't say anywhere and my dealer is useless.
I've always run a mobile 1 oil, but since I'm new to corvettes I honestly don't know what that part # means. I may switch to a 5-30w mobile 1 unless it voids warranty.

There is a bulletin that went out to all GM dealers stating that all C7 Corvettes in the " First two years get Mobil 1.
My 2018 has an oil Cap that specifies Mobil 1, 5w30 which is a full synthetic.
What year is your car and which dealer did the oil change,
Thanks

* go to Corvette action centre
* click on C7 Corvettes
*click on Engine-Drivetrains (42), and scroll down to "PIP 5290D , OCT 17 2016, 2014-2017 CORVETTE SERVICE BULLETIN-oil change information for 2014-2017 Cevrolet Corvette"
This bulletin states that all Corvettes in the 2 year/24000 mile complete care program are to get Mobil 1 as it's cost is accounted for in the warranty program and the dealer gets reimbursed for Mobil 1.
A dealer might point out that the bulletin says (US) cars however if the manufacturer thinks its important enough for US cars then it should apply to the Canadian cars as well.
Also in the Corvette Action Centre you can find the bulletin that requires the first oil change at 500 miles for dry sump cars ( Z-51,GS,Z06) AND to prevent overfill the dealer should put less oil in than the owners manual/service manual calls for.
I would check the oil level after the dealer did the change. Your owners manual I think states to get an accurate reading you shut the engine down and wait , I believe, 10 minutes and then check the stick. If you are overfilled you should have the dealer remove the excess as especially with "spirited" driving the engine can burp oil into the induction side of the engine which includes getting it into the air filter.
On the forum here there are a lot of good threads/posts regarding these topics..............good luck, hope this helps.

As we point out on the Ferrari forum - no Ferraris have blown engines due to "incorrect" oil..... I ran the Dexos oil in my C7 for the first two years.... I'm approaching year three and 55,000 miles.... have more than 700K miles in Vettes over the past 27 years....

Hmm, just to set some comments straight.
First, dexos is a GM oil specification-GM is not in the oil business. There are >50 brands/types that meet the spec AND pay GM a “tribute” to put “dexos” spec on the container. Just like they pay API. For some specs pennies/quart. They can be blends. Mobil 1 meets dexos spec. Says so on the Jugs of Mobil 1 I get from Walmart! GM has a part number for it, which may be what you got. Call the parts department and ask.
However dealers can buy a 55 gallon drums of OH-SO-PEACHY oil that meets the dexos spec, and is cheap, from whoever. They put the drum in the oil change bay for the mechanics helper to use. The newbie mechanics choice is to pull the trigger on a gun that pumps oil through a hose from the drum or go to the parts department and for a dry sump carry 10 quarts of Mobil 1 back to the Service bay!
The correct way to fill according to the 4 volume Service Manual is to underfill and check the level. It’s the level that is important NOT as the Service Manual says, the estimate in the table. (Appreciate that Bill races and there some overfill is suggested as lots of oil in the crackcase at high rpm, but been following this overfill issue on several Vette forums since I got my September 2013 built Z51 and many reports of overfill by a dealer that caused oil to drip on the ground because it got into the air intake tube, ran down to the filter, soaked it and leaked!). I have been using the underfill and check level approach since I was 12 and changed oil with my dad! It’s level that is important in Wet or Dry sumps not volume. Depends on getting all oil out etc. Excess oil in a wet sump can cause the oil to hit the spinning crack etc. Many manuals say it is as bad to overfill as underfill!
In fact many of us who don’t Track fill half way in the hatched area. That is 1/2 quart over the Min line and 1/2 quart below the Max line on the dip stick. Because of the many oil drip problems reported and new mechanics working the oil change bay, some who have the dealer change oil ask to have it filled with only 9 quarts and be given the 10th. Then they check when they get the car home and often find they need only~1/4 quart or less to get to half way on the dip stick. Also they can see it was Mobil 1 that was used! (I do all my own changes and have in my Z51, now my Grand Sport and use that method. I have used the dip stick level method not quantity method with all 5 Vettes, trucks, Jeep, Street Rod etc I ever owned! )
HOW TO CHECK LEVEL
The info is in the Owner’s Manual, learn the correct way-this is why.
The oil must be above 175F to check. The drive home will get it to that temp or higher.
Then wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain down from the baffles and walls of the dry sump tank.
BUT do not wait more than 10 minutes or oil drains back to the oil pan and you’ll get a false low reading! For fun I checked my oil before stating the engine after it sat for some time. It was below the end of the dip stick! That is >5 quarts low! (It goes back quickly when you start the car. That is what some hear and wonder what if flowing.)
NEW GRAND SPORT OWNERS
For those who bought a Grand Sport only because they liked the looks-you now have a dry sump so please read the Owner’s Manual and learn the proper way to check oil level.
Also be prepared to change brake pads! It comes with racing type pads that produce a lot of dust! In my Z51 I was having to clean my wheels every two trips to town, ~100 miles total. If I didn’t it not only looked bad the dust was pitting my black wheels. Switched to low dust ceramic pads. In fact on my Grand Sport, when I got the car home with ~30 miles I installed Carbotech 1521 pads as they are low dust and stop great.. Better than even the OEM pads when cold! FWIW

My free oil changes, include a $46.00 up charge for Mobil1.
I paid for the first one, and haven't been back. I do my oil changes myself.
Now I'm sure I get Mobil1, the right amount, and a full oil filter when it is installed.
More than likely, the dealer doesn't fill the filter before putting it on.

My dealer charged me an additional $100.00 to use Mobil 1 15w-50. I sent him the service bulletin info outlined above and told him I will be by today to pickup my check for $100.00. Why are all auto dealers so sleazy?

Then I’m sure it’s lifted properly, the rocker panels aren’t cracked, all old oil was drained, the filter is not over tightened, it’s filled to the right level AND Mobil 1 was used.

My first 2 oil changes at my dealer state that they added 10 qts. of bulk Mobil 1 5/30. The part number they show is 89021624. Does anyone know if is that a valid Mobil 1 bulk part number?

It's sorry commentary on all involved that we must do our own maintenance work (out of pocket, when GM offers to do so) in order to be sure that it is done correctly and/or that we don't get ripped off!

I have only 9800 miles in a Vette and I enjoy every moment I can imagine the joy you've had driving 700K miles in Vettes.
That is so awesome.
