Had a C6 Z51 and a C7 Z51 both without mag shocks. Bought a Grand Sport and no choice it comes with mag shocks.
With our relatively good roads in SC don’t see a lot of difference in normal driving. Just as GM says the ride in the Grand Sport is softer in Touring but IMO not very much. GM also says Sport is stiffer than the none mag shock Z51, which it definitely is from my observation so I drive in a Touring.
In Track, it can rattle your teeth! As one poster said you can feel if you’re going over a dime! Track is fine for my favorite 270 degree exit ramp but it is back to Touring for normal driving.
There are some downsides, IMO. I drove my 2014 Z51 always in Sport mode because I liked the Steering and Throttle response and it not affect ride. The 2014 Throttle response in Sport was the same as Track, both max. I have the Grand Sport set to always have steering in Sport Mode regardless of driving mode, so it is fine. To get max Throttle response the 2017 table shows you need to be in Track Mode. No option to set it as desired regardless of driving mode. After 3 1/2 years in max Throttle response did not like the Grand Sport slow response when in Touring. Added a Vitesse Throttle control set at mid way to match what I was used too. All is fine now for normal driving.
Had an experiance the other day on the Interstate that also makes me wonder if it would have been somewhat better with the Z51 45mm fixed Bilstein none mag shocks (base C7 has only 36mm shocks.) Had to make a quick transient response with both on an Interstate going ~75 mph to avoid an 18 Wheeler tire tread in my lane. With the 2014 none mag shock Z51 it felt like a Go Kart, instant response and recovery. With the Grand Sport set at Touring, turned as quickly but the recovery was not as crisp. Perhaps the specific situation, but if in Track the transient response may have been better. Will have to use Track when on the Interstate and next tire tread see how it response!
Unfortunately in our area, lots of 18 Wheeler tires treads pop up and if following and SUV or pick-up who often just go over them, they come up quickly! These were both large enough to destroy the ~$1000 carbon fiber splitter on both cars!

It’s the amount of assistance that varies. Track is the least, Sport next and most assistance at Touring. There is an option to have it always set in Track or Sport if you elect.
Otherwise it changes with driving mode. For street driving I find Sport best for me.
Note, steering ratio does not change only the amount of assistance some refer to as road feel.

Corvette owners and our OCD. He will probably go out of his mind wondering what it would have been like to have the Magnetic ride so he will end up taking the financial hit and getting a car with it only to realize...yeah, there's a difference but not worth the $10,000 hit it cost me for that difference.

But, if his mind is made up it's just going to drive you nuts trying to change him. I know you're trying to save him from losing money, but it's not worth your worry. IMHO

Yeah, he’s not a die hard Vette guy, not even on the forum. He had gotten a good deal on the car and I had just got together with him this past weekend and pointed out that his car didn’t have it. ( I don’t know how he didn’t notice the suspension not changing when switching drive modes myself), but after I explained it he was pissed. I told him it’s not a crazy big deal and the car was still beyond the performance he could bring it to but he’s upset that he thinks he’s lacking something now.
It’s one of those “ I don’t have it so I’m mad now” type of things I think...

I wouldn't own a C7 without MSRC. The ride difference between Tour and Sport is dramatic on rougher pavement. Without you basically get the Sport setting all the time in a Z51.
That maybe OK for many people, and it's certainly what most people are used to in sports cars. However, it is incredibly nice to be able to soften up the ride when conditions and use call for it.
As a total aside, I'm visiting my brother and family for the holiday, and he lent me his 13K miles, 07 C6 Z06 to drive over the long weekend. Obviously, it's a garage queen. I also owned one, so I'm very familiar with the car, but sold it years ago. Wow, that was quite a shock in terms of how "crude" it felt in comparison to all the refinements on the C7 of any model. Long throw shifts, much less smooth shifter, much too light a clutch, very rough ride, noisy as hell, and sadly, an incredible number of rattles.
I loved that car when I owned one, but it is amazing how much better the new gen truly is.

I couldnt agree more with your impressions. I also had a 2008 Z06 and although it handled like it was on rails, it rode like a lumber truck on all but mainly smooth roads. I have a 2014 Z51/ mag ride Stingray and I would never own another vette without mag ride.

When the OP said his friend is not really a "Vette Guy" that's all I needed to know. Explains everything.

Why would he not know he was buying a C7 without Magnetic Selective Ride Control??
Seems kinda stupid to mention it months later, no?!

What would I do... simple, I'd tell him it's not my choice but his, and I'd let him have at it. Then, I'd relax and let HIM do whatever HE chose.
