Default After 7 months of a dead fish smell

Several months ago I posted that my car smelled like dead fish.

I have continued to have this obnoxious odor in my car and finally thought to check the cabin filter.

It must have gotten in during transport....but where is it now? I say "it", as I don't know specifically what "it" is.
How in the hell do critters access the filter?

Looks like u have a dead mouse or squirrel somewhere. If it has been smelling for a few months, it'll probably stop smelling soon once it's fully decomposed lol.

Good luck I hope u find it.

Hope that it is dead and it goes away over time and that it is not continuing to do damage inside somewhere....

I've had one of those dang critters build a nest in the cabin filter of a C6. Took awhile for that smell to go away. Glad you found your problem.

For what it's worth, 3 times now my Z has smelled exactly like dead fish. Every time it was raining. Usually lasts several days and the goes away. Who knows, maybe I ran over some roadkill and didn't know it. BUT, it's never done it when it's dry outside.

I remember you saying this in an earlier post. The day I purchased my C7, it was torrential rain for the 100 mile drive home.....it wasn't 5 days later that I posted that my car smelled. I think you chimed in.

You might want to try vacuuming out the filter housing with some type of crevice tool or plastic tubing taped to the end of a vacuum hose to get all the loose stuff out. Then try swabbing out the interior of the filter housing by wrapping a piece of microfiber towel around a ruler, or yard stick or a wooden dowel or anything that will fit down there with some type of spray on it to deodorize the filter housing. There is a product that is available on amazon called Steri-fab. It is labeled as a (are you ready for this) bactericide, sanitizer, fungicide, mildewcide, insecticide, deodorant, germicide and viricide all in one handy spray bottle. I think this **** will kill everything on the planet except humans! It is 60% isopropyl alcohol and smells like alcohol. Waiting for the smell to go away on its own could take forever. You should be proactive and get in there and get as much of the decomposing matter/ feces/ urine and what ever else is in there out. It will probably make the smell go away faster.

Amazon Amazon

You sure it was a critter and not your neighbor?

PS: suggest leaving the windows open in the garage; get some carpet fresh; and some air vent fresheners like fabreeze; in addition to the above suggestions from other CF members. Good luck!

Mice can get in the car even while it's sitting at the dealership, parked outside or inside. The most worthless creature known to man.

Possible, but doubt it happened during transport unless you had one of the transporters who off-load cars and store them in a warehouse waiting for another trailer going your way.

Not running A/C reduces the likelihood of such smells (the usual one that happens). When you run the A/C, it keeps the humidity in check, but keeps a large amount of it in the system, creating a nice fertile ground for bacteria. When you restart the car, all that humidity that was not yet dumped through condensation when you ran the car last time is dumped into the system, creating a smell along it.

I live in PNW, and A/C mostly not even necessary throughout the whole year (temps usually fluctuate around 40-80 except a few weeks of winter and summer), and don't run A/C (by turning it off and not using defrost buttons). None of the cars ever make the smell.

As a side note, if you need to run the A/C, you may consider making it a habit to turn off A/C a few minutes before pulling in to your house, so the system has a better chance of cycling that humid air instead of storing it for the next run.

We had to do that on the B-777 system for a while, turn off air before pulling into the gate.

The C6 had an AC setting called Afterblow ( ) that could be turned on by the dealer and would run the fan for a few minutes after shutdown. Not sure about the C7.

The dead fish smell I've had is not the AC smell......my C5 had it real bad and maybe my C6, don't recall. This literally smells like rotting fish / low tide.
