Rejected because of Vette...

FN, there's no such thing as a "benign political comment" in this kind of forum. We come from all backgrounds and political viewpoints. And as I had mentioned elsewhere, AARP is a for profit corporation, the very definition of capitalism, nothing remotely approaching a socialist model. You want socialism, take a nice drive on one of our socialist interstate highways! In your Corvette!

I've been insuring my Vettes and my house with The Hartford through AARP for 10 years now and no other company has been able to beat their rates so far. Service has always been good, too.
We started with two 2002 C5's and our other cars and now have a Mini Cooper, an Audi Q5, a 2002 C5 and my 2014 M7 2LT Z51 C7 insured through them along with our household. Never an issue.

Have Hardford for over 15 years. They covered my 2005 and currently my 2016. No one has ever beat their rates. The cost to cover the Vette is a little more than my Cruze and Volt. Being 50 or over may make a difference.

The radar story was even worse. They bailed out the company that was going bankrupt so they could finish development work on the new generation of radar guns. In trade they got a chunk of the production, which in turn they gave to PD's in states that they sold insurance (GEICO was in limited markets at that time). The idea of course is they could then surcharge those drivers that got tickets. They even went as far as to start GUARD - Group United Against Radar Detectors.

I have my car insured with the NCM Insurance Agency and am pleased with it. Just be aware of the driving and mileage restrictions on their policies.

I don't get involved in AARP's lobbying or anything else they might do. Unfortunately their lobbying efforts do cost The Hartford some business. Often times I have to sell people with different carriers when The Hartford really would have been the very best fit for them. They just don't like the association with AARP. I try to explain that they are not buying insurance from AARP, they're buying insurance from The Hartford, and of course me, a local agent. The AARP gets a member and $16. Often times they have much of the same response that some of the posters here have expressed... left wing, commie Etc.

The auto insurance is a microcosm of our overall society. I remember when I was younger, I could expect my annual premiums to decrease with a clean driving record and the annual depreciation factor. No more as my rates for all the vehicles in my family have increased despite no tickets, claims or other marks against us. Now more than ever, there is a collective mentality where the large insurance companies cornering the market are trying to get closer to a flat rate for everyone so they can spread the cost, and risk, to all drivers, good and bad.
In Florida, we have no-fault insurance and we also have to pay additional insurance to protect against uninsured motorists. Seriously, isn't that why we have insurance?!

The car getting older will usually not decrease your rate; in fact, it can often be more expensive to repair an older vehicle. The other issue is that new cars can't just be bumped out like they did 25 or 30 years ago. Every panel has a sensor, lighting is expensive, components are super expensive. There are actually more total losses for things that seem minor, but are so expensive to fix it's just not worth it.
The biggest driver of your rates is the liability cost. People run to court for minor fender-benders. In most states, attorney penetration on claims is the major cause for insurance rates going up.

if your rates were decreasing it was either A: your age moved you to a better rated tier or B: your driving record got better (ticket fell off your record, accident aged off etc.) Inflation alone will demand that your rates go up 3 to 4% a year.

We've had USAA auto insurance for over 30 yrs now.
But once every 5 yrs or so, still go out to shop & compare other insurers for our family of 4, with 4 cars.
Just got a letter back from The Hartford:
"Thank you for taking the time to consider the AARP Auto Insurance Program from the The Hartford for your insurance needs.
For the Program to maintain competitive prices and to offer quality protection, we've established eligibility requirements.
Regretfully, we are unable to provide you with coverage at this time. We came to the decision because certain vehicles, like your 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 2LT Z51, are either more susceptible to damage or are more expensive to repair than others.
It is important to us that you find the right coverage and rates. Please consider contacting another carrier for your insurance needs.
Sincerely,
Susan L. Castaneda
Assistant Vice President
The Hartford
AARP Auto Insurance Program"
I appreciate their honesty about rejecting us because we have a Vette in the household. But did their actuaries actually looked at how much it costs to repair our BMW & Mercedes? & maybe my other cars are much more susceptible to damage from being driven by my wife & kids...?

Melting Slicks
Slightly O/T but the cost of repairing cars has skyrocketed with all the comfort/entertainment/performance features and toys that have been installed in nearly every open space.
A buddy had a six month old '17 Mustang GT and got tagged in the right rear quarter panel... He sent me pics of the damage, and I figured that $5k would be an outrageous but "normal" overcharge in today's market, but due to hidden internal damage USAA totaled the car...
The good news is he took the insurance money and bought a 'vette

Same thing with me many years ago with Liberty Mutual Insurance. They said they were not going to renew auto insurance on certain vehicles and the Corvette was on the list.
When I applied to other auto insurance companys, they were aware of the Liberty Mutual non renewal reason and it would not affect my policy rate due to being denied insurance from Liberty Mutual.

Sure a Corvette may be pricier to repair than other cars, but it gets involved in far fewer accidents, so the much larger portion of your insurance premium - the liability portion - should be considerably lower. Last time I checked the 6 month liability premium for my 2017 C7 was like $100 over six months than my 2011 Prius - because Corvettes don't crash that often, not nearly as much as a Prius.
True story bro. We have Nationwide.

Corvette - $900 a year - USAA
Crown Victoria - $2,700 a year - USAA
Just because I have a teen daughter driving, I get this tripe. =P IT seems wrong on so many levels.
USAA would not insure my sport bike. Flat out refused. It happens.

My son went to work in China so he left his Kia Optima at our home. USAA charged me $1200 to insure it under my policy. He also stuck me with the payments because he couldn't find a buyer for it. I used it as a trade-in because my wife wanted a new vehicle. Got rid of the payments and the insurance. Her new Ford Fiesta was $650 to insure.
