Default Tail of the Dragon

Thinking of doing the Tail of the Dragon tour after the NCM Bash in April. Any feedback - good, bad or indifferent - would be appreciated. Thanks.

Be very careful as many of the tight corners are blind. I was leading a group of Corvettes and was pushing it fairly aggressive, yet safely(around 8/10). I was going around a fairly tight, blind right hand turn when I came upon two bicycles going uphill at around 5 MPH. No shoulder on the right. I had to hit my brakes hard and luckily I was able, at the last second, to see no oncoming traffic, so I was able to avoid hitting them by swinging over into the oncoming lane. At the same time, I was grabbing my 2 way radio to warn the Corvettes behind me about the bicycles.

The bicycles had the same right to use the road as I did, and if I had hit them, I would have been in deep ****(as would they would also be) as I would automatically be in the wrong.

That was on a "low usage" day(Monday morning in early October).

Of course, it's always a problem with the bikers not being able to stay in their lane of traffic. Narrow lanes and difficult to go onto a non-existing shoulder to avoid them.

Default Nice tail

I believe if you enter from the Tenn. Side it's not marked that well, as is the n.carolina side. Also, you want to make this ride YOUR ride. Ex..If somebody is in front of you give them at least a 5min. Headstart.

Just watch out for 18 wheeler & motorcycles on it. Also the law run your radar if you have one & going to be doing over the speed limit

I live about 1 1/2 hrs away we do it every year now for the last 15 plus yrs. Always has been someone on a motorcycle doing crazy crap are a wreck, Are some 18 wheeler in one of the sharp curves taking both lanes. But it is truly a fun drive something to check off the bucket list. Robert

I believe they have now restricted the 18 (trucks over 30 feet long)from using that road, but just like everywhere else, there will be some truckers that will decide to ignore the law.

Dark areas are 18 wheeler restricted, but that doesn't mean you won't run into one.

Say what? The Dragon is about 99% in Tennessee. You enter NC very close to Deals Gap. The end of the "Dragon".

You are correct. I live in Knoxville and have led the "Corvette Expo" Through the Dragon for many years. I missed this year due to health reasons. We've had as many as 350 Vettes in a line following me.

We do the Dragon several times a year and find that early morning is the best. Usually little traffic at that time but be sure to stay on your side of the yellow line.
Lots of other good roads in that area as well. My favorite is the Cherhola Skyway!

2017 ON 129 18 wheeler on it so they still get into the trail but for sure less than a few yrs back. Go to know they are not to be on it now anyway. Robert

And once you have completed keep going and do the Blue Ridge Parkway. Did it last year and would do it again without hesitation.

If you can during the week is less traveled.

I heard the problem with trucks is that GPS shows it being more direct or faster

I have tried it several times over the last few years and always get hung up behind someone. It seems a little dangerous now around those blind corners. If would go at the speed and Gs I wanted it would be a huge gamble. Just like those bikes mentioned in an above post. I have tried the most optimum hours and still no go. Always something!

Deals Gap is a must for everyone to at least experience once but there are so many equally challenging roads in this area that are not as crowded. The tail has definitely built a legendary reputation.

+1 on the Cherohala Skyway, even if it is misspelled.

Looks just like my -7

I have a picture similar to yours, someplace, although mine shows about 4 Vettes following me through the turns.

Drove it last year in August and it was a blast, definitely worth the trip from Texas!

Take your time and enjoy the road. Pull over at the overlooks and take in the scenery. It's best to drive it during the week. The weekends can be crowded depending on the weather.
