Z51 is an option package on the Stingray. Not all Stingrays have it.

Z51 is an option and a 1, 2, or 3 LT may have the option. The Z51 package includes upgraded suspension, brakes, tires, and the transmission has different gear ratios. The rotors are slotted and it has a rear spoiler, but the spoiler is an option on the other Stingrays.

Up to 2017 Z51 package also included the 19" front wheels and 20" rears. Brake cooling ducts in the front air dam.

Look at the 5th digit, to determine trim level.

Interior trim levels are 1LT, 2LT and 3LT (1LZ, 2LZ and 3LZ for the Z06). LT1 is the engine code (LT4 on the Z06).

All Z51s are Stingrays but not all Stingrays are Z51s. In any case, Congrats to your son on his new vette. My dad and I both have Camaros. Always nice to share father-son interests.

Of course you can always get a copy of the window sticker from the National Corvette Museum, costs a couple bucks but is a nice thing to have. If you don't want that you can go to a dealer and ask them to print out the build sheet for you. Just to totally confirm everything.

To add to the Z51 list, they also have an electronic limited slip differential, brake cooling ducts, and oil and transmission coolers. It's effectively a "narrow-body" GS.

You could also get the 19/20 inch wheels on the non-Z-51 in 2016 with the magnetic ride suspension and spoiler, so the only eternal different look is the brakes. If the car has slotted rotters and black calipers (unless they are some optional color, e.g. red, yellow, etc. then caliper color does not apply) it is a Z-51. Plain rotors and gray calipers (unless they are some optional color) and it is not a Z-51.

I have a "non-Z51" 2017 Stingray. It has 19" rear wheels and 18" for the front. No slotted rotors, no 'dry sump' oil system and the smaller (which I like better) rear spoiler. I do have the 2LT trim package - but that has nothing to do with the Z51 hardware.
If you drive your car hard or "track" it, I suppose the Z51 is money well spent. For my purposes - having a C7 as a weekend toy & garage queen - it would be an unnecessary cost. To each his own, I suppose.
I like the clean looks of the Stingray and the LT1 engine has more than adequate power for my needs. Some folks like the bigger & wider Grand Sport and others enjoy having the 650 hp of the Z06. That is part of the beauty of the C7 - they can build one for everyone and suit almost all tastes. Heck, that hot new 2019 ZR1 will find a few lucky buyers too.
P.S. From what I understand, the 2018 Corvettes no longer have the 19"/18" wheels and now feature 20"/19" rims on the base Stingray without the Z51 package.

A few posts mentioned still street rideable...just double checking.
I kind of think overkill also.
It makes me wonder because there is one at a dealer which seems priced to low and we all know if it sounds to good to be true etc
