A GS MT weights 3,428 Lb., curb weight. A Carrera GTS MT weighs 3,197 Lb. Both are about the same size, and have larger wheels, wider bodies, bigger brakes, and a decent degree of luxury. Considering the GS is plastic/CF/aluminum and the GTS is steel monocoque, I don't understand how the GS can weigh so much more. I know the GS has an eight and the GTS has a six, but it shouldn't make a large difference. As a data point, I built an all-aluminum Ford FE a few years ago (427 stroked to 487), and the block with caps weighs 95 lb. The heads are super light too. I can't really see the engine accounting for more than 50 Lb. difference, since the GS engine is aluminum.

Seriously? That's hardly a big difference in weight considering the difference in wheelbase ("Both are about the same size..." NOT) and the difference in engine location.

When the C7 came out, there was a post that listed all the things that increased the weight over a C6.
The AFM and it's associated changes were a big increase, and one that most of us would pay good money to eliminate.
The infotainment system also put on a lot of unwanted (for me) pounds.
Someone will probably post the list for you.

231 lbs in not “much heavier,” and the GS is bigger... with a bigger engine, wheels, tires, etc.

Also keep in mind the Corvette has more basic equipment that are optional on the GTS. If you add the equivalent of all the things that the GS has onto the GTS, the weight should even out.

Let me rephrase the question.
Why is a Carerra GTS so much more expensive than a Corvette when it offers less performance than a Z06?

2) The base price for the GTS is $120,000. That additional $50,000+ in price for the GTS over the GS *might* have something to do with it. I'm quite sure if GM wanted to charge $50,000 more for the GS, they could probably cut a few pounds off of it too. Lightweight seats, CF torque tube, more magnesium parts, lighter wheels, lighter brakes, drop AFM, reduced content, etc. Yep, I'm quite sure if GM were to spend an additional $50k per car, they could drop 200 lbs.
But how many people want or can afford a $120,000 Grand Sport?

Real world weights show closer to 100 pounds difference (111 in this test), easily explained by the fact that the GS has a V8, is 6 inches wider plus things like the torque tube, longer exhausts, massive control arms vs. basic strut style suspension, etc. I'd also bet its platform is far more rigid, which may explain its higher mechanical grip.

It's a larger vehicle that costs a lot less. Larger vehicle = more weight. Light materials = more money.

BTW, as far as cost goes, Porsche as a company gets among the highest margins in the industry, and I think their dealers receive higher commissions and payments. Costs of doing business in Europe, where they (1) provide tons of social services, and (2) barely work are higher. They *do* spend more on interior materials and some other things. But my point is that the actual COGS for a Porsche vs. a Corvette may be closer than you think.

...the Porsche weight you’ve given us is a wet weight, or is it a dry weight?

It's more surprising there's not more difference in weight.
