One clearly a track car, the other will be more 1/4 mile focus, really not in the same category. Also we know nothing about the 500 other then maybe 700hp, no price or specs yet. If he wants the GT500 the demon is more of a comparison (although I'm sure the mustang will handle way better) If he is enticed by the power he should be comparing to a Z06.

460 HP vs 725 HP??? Is this a comparison you want to make? The GT500 is in the league with the ZR1 without the price tag. However, Ford dealers are real big on adding huge ADM so add another 30K to the MSRP. Ford controls production numbers so their dealers can do this.

Wait until the Mustang has been released first. Then take a test drive; good luck finding one that isn't marked up at least 20-100%.
I'd give the whole thing at least 6 months to a year, then go at it and find out which one feels better. The GT-350 garnered good reviews for handling, but mainly enamored people with it's screaming flat-plane NA engine.
There is a decent amount of speculation out there regarding the GT-500, so no point in getting all worked up until they are released into the wild, so to speak. The GS is an awesome car, and much slicker in appearance, at least in my opinion.

GT500 obviously. ...but not the same class of car.
Oh, and this is a Corvette forum. You need something a little less biased me thinks. Best not to **** in the nachos.

Hey Will, welcome to the C7 forum.
It's nice that your friend asked for your help, but this isn't something you can really help him with because it's a very personal decision that depends on several variables - all of which need to be decided by your friend since he'll own it and pay for it.
I'm not 'biased' toward either. Over the years we've owned 28 Mustangs of various types, and three vettes (first vette purchased in April 2015). I think the new Mustangs are very nice, but I've 'outgrown' them. But what I think doesn't matter for your friend. Good luck to him - both are (going to be in the case of the 500) nice cars.

The GT500 would be priced closer to the Z06 and ZR1. Yes, it’ll have massive power, most likely around 700-800HP and it’ll handle fabulously on the track but probably won’t beat a ZR1. I’d imagine the differences would be similar when comparing a Mustang GT and a Stingray; at the end of the day the Mustang will always be a larger, heavier 2+2 pony car, while the Vette is a true sports car. In this case, both cars would be the highest performing track focused versions but it would still hold true IMO.
Now if we are talking about the “specialness” of the car I’d say the GT500 has the ZR1 beat on that. It would probably have a higher resale value down the road as well.

It seems there is always at least one Sportscar vs. Muscle Car thread active on this forum...and the answer is always the same.
Maybe we need a Sticky for those who don't understand the Corvette is NOT a Muscle Car?

Exactly you either want a high performance sportscar or a high power muscle car.

If I was comparing the two with performance as my only factor, the GT500 would win easily. Any handling deficiencies suffered by the Mustang would easily be made up for with the massive difference in horsepower.
A base Z06 costs about the same as a well optioned GS. I think the Z06 would be a better competitor for a high horsepower muscle car like the GT500.
If he is looking at a Mustang, maybe he should also be looking at a Camaro ZL1. The ZL1 will be easier to find than the Mustang and will also be considerably less expensive since there will be no "market adjustments" to the Camaro. (At least where I live I am not seeing "market adjustment" tacked on to the ZL1) .
If the GT500 ends up having 800 horsepower or so, a quick blower swap can close the horsepower gap between the Camaro and Mustang. (And probably still cost less than a new Mustang GT500.)

I hope you’re joking.
