Default Am I going to take a bath on this?

I bought my 2017 3LZ ZO7 last April. It's everything that I wanted, except it's an A8. My wife burned up three clutches in the only stick shift she's ever driven and when I told her that I wanted the M7 she complained that she wouldn't be able to drive it. So, A8. In the time we've had the car, she's driven it exactly one time for about 15 minutes and I had to force her to do it. I love the car, but it's getting to the point that I think about that stick all the time.

So, my car was $107K, I picked it up for $94K and it's loaded. How much of a bath do you think I'd take if I traded this in for either a Z07 or GS with that M7? I'd love to do it but suspect I'll take such a hit that it won't be worthwhile. Failing that, is there any upgrade path I can take to drop that gearbox in the car?

Thanks,
Mike

Take your A8 to the strip. When you beat the M7s around you, you'll feel better.

Yes you will take a bath, a hot one. I'm guessing at lest 25-30% off MSRP. Maybe more if you trade. Good luck.

Swapping the tranny is a major project and involved a lot more than just the tranny. Lots of other electronics and connections.

it’s going to hurt. But well worth it, as a 100k compromise sucks. For that kind of coin, I want to smile every trip, and not have that itch saying,”stick more fun”. I have both, as my wife drives an auto. I like driving her car, and it’s fun. But when I slide into my GS, I grab the shifter and smile ear to ear, driving the car I love to be connect with. And I find the direct cnnection worth slower shifts and slightly less MPG worth every second. If it makes you feel better look how much people pay to have a Porsche with a stick. Good luck! Worst case your stuck in an amazing beast that shifts fast.

Buy a new Z with an M7 and use her daily driver for a trade in. Problem solved.

My take is this. If you can afford it, do it. You're supposed to enjoy the car.

Maybe if you could find a 2017 still out there on a lot equipped as you'd want, a deep discount could help, but its probably going to hurt $$$-wise, regardless. That said, it still might hurt less than sitting down in a vehicle you paid a lot of $$$ for already, and being let down every time you put the automatic shifter in D.

I'd guess true trade-in value (not including off-MSRP 'discount' on the new car) is going to be somewhere in the 70's. So, if you trade like-for like, probably another $20k out of pocket for you?

Well now, maybe expand your options a little. If you get a lightly used alternative, it could be near break even. But, yea, if you want new, it is going to be a hot one.

Ha! My wife burned 3 clutches out of my Eagle Talon back in the 90s when she had to drive it to school and so she was actually a minor factor in my getting the A8 as well and she's driven it exactly 0 times. She actually drove the C6Z with a stick more!

But if you live in the real world with the rest of us where a $30K depreciation hit to swap a transmission would just be too painful, you might want to learn to love the A8. It has a lot of things about it to love, but it's not an M7. But there is performance shift mode, launch control, and lots of things to play with in terms of getting the best off the line acceleration, something you (or at least most people) can't approach with the M7.

It's different, but it's different good. I had a bit of M6 remorse (outgoing C6Z I had traded) but I have other stick cars, so I was OK. But if you have NO other stick cars, that's another argument for making the switch.

Only one way to find out for sure start visiting the dealers and see what they offer you. Can not blame you for wanting to get the M7.

I've had several cars that I took a huge bath on to get out of. It hurts, but really, life is short, you only live once, and if it's just not doing it for you, for whatever reason, then you need to move along.

Only you can determine if your desire for a M7 makes sense...no one here knows your financial situation or your mental ability accept the situation.

Funny thing about this forum; there is a well known member who claims to have bought almost 100 new Vettes, he recently took delivery of a Carbon 65 Z that he is now dumping for a ZR1...don’t think anyone has ever discouraged or said “dude you’re taking a blood bath”

With this forum seems to matter how you frame it. The young adults who ask if they should buy a new C7 always get a stern lecture.

Years ago I found a 73 L82 Vert. It would have been the car I ordered new, except it was auto. I bought it because it was a great car. My intention was to swap to a 4 speed, much easier in C3s. I had all of the parts lined up and ready to go. My wife then voiced her opinion. "I won't be able drive it....etc." After several tense discussions, I scrapped the plans for the swap. I owned that car for nearly 8 years. She drove it once. Once. If something happened to it, didn't want it to her her doing it. Every car I have had since has had 3 pedals. Get out there and see what the numbers are on a trade, if it makes sense to you, do it and never look back.

I sympathize. Been there, done that. Held onto my 2015 for two years with the same trepidation eating away at me continuously, made worse by TC issues that plagued me the entire time. I bit the bullet and bought my current M7 GS one year ago and it was worth it to me. Life is good again in shift heaven.

If you don't need or use the extra 190 HP in your Z06, get a GS, which is basically the same car sans the blower and may have plenty of power for you. That will take some of the financial sting out of the transition.

I've got a feeling I'll feel your pain all the way over here in North Carolina. Good luck on your decision.

Your choice- your wallet or your mind, as it is not a recipe for enjoying your current car wishing you had something different.
