Default Added OEM Navigation aftermarket, for a reasonable cost

Even though my Z was 79k, it didnt come with Navigation and that has been royally pissing me off simply because you get navigation in even the most basic cars these days it seems. Looking at aftermarket options though like OEM programmed modules they wanted $995 and wouldnt even budge 20 bucks on price....

I did buy navtool for the mirroring function, but wasnt ever sure if that would ever show up so I kept my eyes open. Recently saw a thread where someone pointed out another vendor had come into the market, with a considerable price discount on OEM navigation.

I ended up buying this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/272079368597?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

We did have some confusion and they initially shipped a unit that wasnt programmed right because I requested a change to be a 2015 module without airplay, but they made right and 2 day shipped a replacement that worked well after calling me a couple times to confirm what I wanted. GREAT customer service.

Why did I make this post? Because I know some others are on the fence and dont want to drop 1k on the stock navigation, but for a couple hundred less might be interested. YOu even get weather app too

Useful - did you have to give them your VIN # to program into it?

Yes VIN is required to program the HMI to your car.

This is great, thanks. Who did the installation? Is this something an average guy can do in his garage? Are detailed instructions included?

Yes, very DIY - this video shows how - just plug/play.

It's a two beer project with no tools needed, just your fingers and some dexterity for reaching in tight places.

When I say no tools, I just put the GPS antennae on the A pillar, and ran the cable down in between the trim pieces down to the HMI module....The video hides it completely and thus uses tools.

It will work but the apple carplay will not be functional. This was my mistake I originally made and told the vendor to just give me the 15 HMI module instead as I was just after the navigation/weather function.

Perfect! I assume all functions such as voice activation, etc. work as factory OEM?

Okay, I just ordered it. I'm hoping I can integrate Navtool for the front facing camera.

Sounds like a cost effective way to add nav to the car.

Should have no issues. I will be doing this exact same thing...Parts are downstairs and car is apart while I slowly find time to install them when my 4 month old isnt needing massive attention...

Cool, let us know how it goes. BTW, how much did the NAVTOOL cost? Does it come with the camera or is that separate?

Probably a dumb question, but are updates still available and do you still have to pay for them ??

Thanks

Map updates? I think I saw documentation on that in the packet they sent me...but i threw it away. I recall it being the same as the OEM process for upgrading though.

I got everything hooked up and the Navi works great. I don't know if this is just a coincidence, but now my Check Engine light stays lit when I start the car. I drove a few miles and it never turned off. I hope I didn't do something wrong like short a wire during the installation.

Update: I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes and when I hooked it back up the light turned off.
