Apple iPod Touches are still manufactured and are very nice. I won one at a corporate event after dropping my business card in a drawing bowl. Since I already own an iPhone and iPad, I wasn't sure if I would use it, but it's basically a really nice memory stick with artwork and other apps with my entire digital music collection loaded on. Plus, connecting by USB is a better connection in terms of fidelity than Bluetooth and the artwork all syncs up. Plug it in behind the retractable display screen and forget about it.

All those who believe there are no iPods, you may want to look on Apple.com. They still make an iPod touch, but they don't sell many because iPhones and streaming have more or less made iPods "obsolete".
I use a "re-purposed" iPhone 5 as an iPod in my C7 (2015) connected via lightning cable to the USB port behind the touch screen.
The advantage over a blutooth connection to my iPhone X or before that an iPhone 6 Plus, is the infotainment system will display album artwork when connected via USB, but not when playing from an iPhone connected by blutooth.
I haven't tried any of my older iPods in it--have an iPod classic in my Porsche (the gateway 500 I installed in it, can only charge older iPods, but cannot charge newer iPods or the iPhone 5 going forward).

I use an iPod touch via USB, but I've got to say it's pretty buggy. I've had instances where it will simply refuse to play a selection after I've browsed for a particular artist. When I start the car, it will often start over at the first song of whatever playlist I happen to be in. I have an old mechanical drive iPod that worked flawlessly but would sometimes produce audible noise from the speakers. I suspect this was caused by the mechanical drive as it was spinning. I've got a 64GB stick that I intend to use for my iTunes media, and one day I'll sit down and try to make that work.

iPods are fine to use and will work. The issue is that the iPod indexing and car systems (like MyLink) sometimes don't like each other.
A USB drive is more fool proof, but also is harder to setup unless you are more computer inclined.
Any Apple device with a Lighting Cable is compatible with the newest systems. If it runs a later version of iOS this is even better.
Car makers haven't realized it isn't the specific hardware which determines support, it is the interface (Lightning vs 30-Pin) and the version of iOS which does.

I'm not a Apple guy but I'll still take an iPod over a regular phone any day of the week. When you have 15,000 MP3s, finding them on a thumb drive can be a PITA. Not to mention, it takes a LOT longer to index MP3s from a thumb drive or phone than it does an iPod.
