Default Oil change disaster

Took my 2014 in for an oil change at local Chevy dealership in Charlotte. Drove home and hour later car would not start... "service anti theft deterrent" displayed. I went though a series of lock- unlock doors, walked away from car, etc... and in about five minutes it cranked. Next morning same thing.. no start and series of random crap and it starts.

Took back to the dealer and for some reason they ran a software update. Now since the car has an aftermarket supercharger, their update screwed up all the tuning with the supercharger.

Check engine light on, oil temp above 200 immediately, smell of rotten eggs for few minutes. Drove to shop and they can't help. They are paying for another specially shop to tune.

Car hesitates, runs like crap, shakes... what damage could have been done?

Are you blaming GM for the screw up because they updated THEIR OEM software which your tune was not compatible with?

If your religious this is the time to say a prayer. Damage could be bad, especially if you got on it. Hopefully you took it easy after it started to run bad.
But why did you drive it after they said they updated it?

This is the reason ALL auto manufacturers void their powertrain warranties as a result of aftermarket tunes/mods.

Sorry this sucks. Did they ask you if you wanted the update? Sounds to me that the update went over the tune you had. There definitely could be some damage. If they did this without your consent they should be liable. There is nothing wrong with modding your car as long as one doesn't try to get the dealer to foot the bill when something goes wrong. I had a similar situation on my Saleen years ago. I had to show up at the dealer with my lawyer before they would make it right.

I drove for about 8-10 miles before it started running bad then drove right back to the shop. Took it easy, but on a highway for a bit going about 55.

There's many considerations in making a decision to tune your C7, this type thing is one of them.

no.. they did not ask me. I took it in b/c of the service theft deterrent message. They never told me what they were doing or going to do.

I'm confused. I thought you took it in for the oil change and the service anti-theft came after you left?

EDIT: Disregard. I get it now. Had to reread a couple times.

Sorry, but for me this is quite confusing.

Why would anyone take a "tuned" car to a dealer for anything? Ones only hope is to specify (including in-writing) that they were NOT to mess with the computer in any way. Even then, if taken to a dealer one abdicates any real control over what is done to the car.

Your situation is certainly regrettable but unfortunately not surprising. If it helps, perhaps someone will learn from your pain.

Just as an additional note, some tuners will keep or supply a backup of the tune for such situations. My local tuner does so.

I can see how the OP would think that taking it in for the service theft message would be OK. The problem is, that any kind of code/message usually tempts the dealer into updating software to solve the problem. They may not have even opened the hood. It's an anti-theft message, so how would they know a supercharger was installed, if this was the case? I know there might be hints like supercharger whine etc.. but let's assume it nobody noticed. The good thing is the OP states the dealership is paying for a re-tune......hopefully from the shop that did the original tune. The real issue is going to be if there was damage that occurred after taking it into the dealer. The probable response from any dealer would be that "hey yes we updated the tune, but guess what that is normal procedure and you voided your warranty prior to us doing this update". It could be a hard lesson learned, but when tuned it is important to find a dealer (if you go that route) that knows and will still work on your vehicle and more importantly knows to ask before updating software.

I run a car dealership. (Not Chevrolet). We have had this happen as well.. first off all the dealer will generally due is a factory reset, tune, etc.. don’t know the circumstances, but basically if you modded the car and did not tell the dealer to do nothing that could effect your mod, and tell them exactly what you have done, your pretty much on your own.. If we are aware a car has a tune, mod etc, generally I tell our people NOT to work on the car at all. And if we do work on a modded car and we are aware of it we will specify we will not be responsible for any issues after.. (See original Post for reasons)

I have a tune on mine because I have A&A SC with meth, I am still on the fence about doing the MSRC upgrade because I am not sure if that would also change my tune. When I do go for service with my car the 1st words that come out of my mouth after I say Hello is I got a SC with a tune so do not mess with my tune.

I see it as an Oil Change "period". The car is a 3yr old car most likely out of warranty so that point is not in play. He probably only paid for an Oil Change on his receipt. So why would any shop do more than an Oil Change? If you went in for a just an update do you expect they would do an Oil Change? Hell No they wouldn't so why did they do anything else to the car at their own choosing? I would say FIX THE F...... CAR!
