Default 500 mile oil change

I have found a used 2017 GS, the car fax for this particular car is reporting "recommended maintenance performed" at 1103 miles, more than double what is recommended for first oil change. Is this a deal breaker?

I can buy car for around 57K with 3K on it.

Thanks for replies, trying to understand all this, lots to consider.

I know your question is serious, and I'm really trying not to be sarcastic in a response. How about I just say, no, that shouldn't be a deal breaker. 603 extra miles before an oil change? Um, not a big deal.

Just take it to a Chevy Service Manager and have them look it over and ask if there are any red flags you should be concerned about. May cost you an hour of labor but worth it if you're worried. Does not having the oil changed at 500 miles(or around there) effect the warranty at all? I have no clue, if not they'd I'd say you'd be ok.

You can pick up a brand new '18 GS from Kerbeck for right around $64K, and you don't have to worry if the oil has been changed. Of course, it would be a 1LT with an M7 at that price. For the difference in price, I would buy new and not have to worry.

Keep in mind that many owners change their own oil, including the 1st oil change.
If so, there would be NO record with GM.

No big deal regardless.

The only reason for the 500-mile change (dry sump cars only) was that the curing of the silicone seals in new engines depletes the anti-foaming agents in the oil. In a few dry sump cars, this caused foaming oil to burp through the vent lines and into the air intake.
It wasn't even a requirement when the 14s first came out, and was instituted late in the MY.

The 500-mile time-frame allowed enough time and heat cycles for the seals to cure. However, the vast majority of cars before the requirement never experienced the problem. If there is no oil in the air intake, no worries.

The two local dealers that have done work on my C6 do not report to Carfax so if you ran my car it shows no oil changes in 65k miles. So it could simply have not been reported but done.

A Carfax report will usually show any warranty work provided by a dealer.

My report shows no Warranty, service or recall work done by any Chevy dealer since I bought the car new.

Forget about CarFax, it's unreliable for all the reasons posted above. It's a voluntary reporting system, for profit business, and many auto businesses increasingly do not like reporting to it.

GMVIS is all that counts. Any GM dealer can give you a report if you supply the VIN.

Just had my '17 GS changed at 3,100 miles. tt has been in storage since Nov. and the Oil life idiot light showed I had 30% left 2 days ago (before change).
Not worried at all, I'll have it changed again in another 3,500 miles. It's built to take it, they ship to Saudi Countries where I've seen
0 maintenance for 1-2 years on cars at high heat in the desert.
it's 2017 when they built it, not 1960, it's engineered to last. GM doesn't want to spend $$$ down the road.
The manual "Recommends" a change, but the Oil light tells you different, I'd say you warranty problems are not a problem at 3K.

No. Not a deal breaker for me.

In fact, I'm going to let mine go a lot more than the 750 or so miles that are already on my non-Z51 racing engine.

A negative Carfax means nothing, whatsoever.

Even for collisions, it means nothing. For routine maintenance, it means less than nothing.

The only problem w/ your theory above is that once in the hands of an owner, the service requirement is at least an annual change regardless of miles for warranty purposes.

If you haven't started the car, the OLM may not be giving you an accurate reading now. But, you'd best honor what it says once the car has been started and is back in service. You also need to check and make sure dealers have reset the OLM when you've had an oil change. They've been known to forget to do so.

I’m going to pick mine up at the museum and drive it 900 miles home, did this with my 14 too, so no I wouldn’t worry about it.

Ref #9 - Agree with Foosh that not a major issue - In addition to what Foosh advised, potential foaming is only an issue at high RPM. Good luck.

The shavings in the oil filter issue was most common to 16 models due to manufacturing problems. Before 16 and this issue there was no 500 mile Change required

Don’t worry it’s not an issue.
