I did not know Wallyworld was that large of a Mobil oil seller!

I have noticed something interesting since the change to 0w40, before with 5w30 the engine oil temp would stay warm from the morning drive to work and the start for lunch (about 3 to 4 hours) So when I would start the engine there would be no yellow bar on the tach at 3500rpm..

Now with 0w40 it always has the yellow band when I start within a couple hours sitting..

Its more a case of the viscosity than the brand.

Oils from different manufacturers might be listed as having the same ratings, yet may have remarkably different viscosity at operating temperature after 1000's of miles.

The best we can do is wait until some people do a UOA on 0w40 and compare values to listed virgin oil analysis.

I haven't switched to 0w40 yet but even with the 5w30, if the car is sitting a couple of hours, i would get the yellow bars. Depending on ambient temp.

The car cools off faster than people expect. Even during summer.

100 degrees outside 5w30 would never drop to the yellow bar, 102 friday and 0w40 dropped to yellow bar at 3500 rpm, simply amazing drop in the heat... That is parking it at 1pm and coming back out at 330pm...

That is the cost in Europe as well. I was just over there and at a Wally world equivalent that was the cost

If the 0W-40 displays the yellow arc on the tach at warmer temperatures than the 5W-30, somehow the car must be able to measure or calculate the viscosity of the oil. That seems unlikely, I think the yellow arc is merely based on oil temperature or coolant temperature, or some combination of both; and calculated based on 5W-30.
But I'd be happy if it's smarter than I thought.

Even at identical air temperatures, I'm guessing that the difference you observed at similar temperatures came from different wind, sunlight, etc.
But I'd be happy to be wrong.

Looking for more reports on this...

EDIT:
Also, if the car has cooled off to 100'F or thereabouts, the viscosity difference between 0W-40 and 5W-30 is pretty small.

Was in Wally World yesterday and saw 0W-40 on the rack, BUT it was labeled European Car Formula or something similar. Is this the same oil or another version?

That’s a different version, one for vettes is ESP 0W40.

Wow, that's crazy then.

So i guess the 0w40 does dissipate(?) the heat better?

Either way i'm waiting for the REAL 0w40 ESP to be on sale already. Wanna try it out.

Yes, and has a dexos2™ certification stamp on the bottle. The Euro formula Mobil 1 0W-40 is not dexos-certified, which is a GM requirement.

Dumb question but can one just go to the dealer to purchase the oil or do we need to have the dealer do the oil change in order to get this oil?

The early bottles were marked "Not for Retail Sale", which I would take to mean they were to be used only for an oil change at the dealer.

Dealers usually do whatever they want, if they have enough on hand to do the oil changes in the near future and they like you, they might sell you some.
Or perhaps the initial crush is over and the restrictive marking is gone on newer shipments.

It was also in 1L bottles, not quarts, and marked not for retail sale.
