Mobil 1 ESP Formula 0W-40 update
#202
I have noticed something interesting since the change to 0w40, before with 5w30 the engine oil temp would stay warm from the morning drive to work and the start for lunch (about 3 to 4 hours) So when I would start the engine there would be no yellow bar on the tach at 3500rpm..
Now with 0w40 it always has the yellow band when I start within a couple hours sitting..

Oils from different manufacturers might be listed as having the same ratings, yet may have remarkably different viscosity at operating temperature after 1000's of miles.
The best we can do is wait until some people do a UOA on 0w40 and compare values to listed virgin oil analysis.

The car cools off faster than people expect. Even during summer.

100 degrees outside 5w30 would never drop to the yellow bar, 102 friday and 0w40 dropped to yellow bar at 3500 rpm, simply amazing drop in the heat... That is parking it at 1pm and coming back out at 330pm...

But I'd be happy if it's smarter than I thought.
Even at identical air temperatures, I'm guessing that the difference you observed at similar temperatures came from different wind, sunlight, etc.
But I'd be happy to be wrong.
Looking for more reports on this...
EDIT:
Also, if the car has cooled off to 100'F or thereabouts, the viscosity difference between 0W-40 and 5W-30 is pretty small.

So i guess the 0w40 does dissipate(?) the heat better?
Either way i'm waiting for the REAL 0w40 ESP to be on sale already. Wanna try it out.

Great news, and first time I've seen it in quart bottles.

Dealers usually do whatever they want, if they have enough on hand to do the oil changes in the near future and they like you, they might sell you some.
Or perhaps the initial crush is over and the restrictive marking is gone on newer shipments.

It was also in 1L bottles, not quarts, and marked not for retail sale.
