Default Mobil 1 ESP Formula 0W-40 update

I got an interesting email from Mobil 1 today. Please see attachment. I didn't realize that it was developed just for Corvettes.
--------------------------------------
Lance,

Hey, I thought you might be interested in this attached flyer. It's our official release regarding the 0W-40, and includes a couple of tidbits that were news to me. I hadn't realized that GM was approving the 0W-40 retroactively for model years back to 2011 when Dexos was introduced.

I know a lot of people will be happy to see the return of the Mobil 1 logo on the oil fill caps, too. I wish I knew if the new caps were going to be backwards compatible with any earlier models. I seem to remember seeing that the thread/mount had changed once or twice over the years. If it is, I can imagine that GM will have a line of Corvette owners around the block trying to get one.

Thank you for choosing Mobil,
Jim

That is some "feel good" reading right there. I felt really good reading that knowing my 2019 Corvette has the good stuff in it.

Any word on when this oil will be available for retail sale to customers? I've searched online and none yet that I can find.

The dry sump itself hasn't changed, so the 0W-40 cap is exactly the same as the 5W-30 cap.

The same applies to the wet sump cap, which does not fit the dry sump. However, the valve covers haven't changed either so 5W-30 and 0W-40 caps will be interchangeable on them as well.

I am scheduling my 500 mile oil change for next Saturday. I'm going to make a point to ask them to put in 0W40 and I believe someone got a new cap through dealer for less than $10.

Wet sump caps are less than $10. Dry sump caps are 3X that for some unknown reason, not currently in stock, and back-ordered 3-4 weeks. I ordered one a couple of weeks ago.

According to the brochure it should be available at retailers in the 3rd quarter of this year and is currently available at dealers.

The brochure has some interesting information and history.

Dry sump cap part number is 12680708.

I ordered from ChevroletOnlineParts.com and the cost was $23.12 plus $15.12 for shipping, which yes, I know, is ridiculous. They are the ones who told me it was back-ordered 3-4 weeks.

Question: was it quoted elsewhere that this new formula will be recommended for Corvettes back to 2011? I don't see it in this announcement.

I am on the fence on how this oil can be as good as if not better than the recommended 15W50 for track use.

I am totally cool with just running 0W-40 for the street. Track however, I need someone to sell me on using this oil for track. Track days subject our motors to tremendous stress where it would only benefit to have a really viscous oil like 15W50.

Thanks for the info. Comparing the data between the current FS 0W-40 and the ESP, there are definitely some differences included less Zinc and Phosphorus content (as expected), but it is dexos, so for those still under warranty the ESP is the way to go. Curious to hear what the oil connoisseurs (cough, cough Patman) think of the ESP compared to the FS.

It is, I called and talked to them.

No, it was said to be recommended and backward compatible to 2014 models, or all LT1 and LT4s.

Foosh,
Have you seen a picture of the new one? I looked it up per your above part# but there was no indication what it looked like.

Yes, I saw a picture on the forum somewhere, but I was also told on the phone by the Chevrolet Online Parts guy that it's just like the picture on my new '18 (built 1/18/18), only it says 0W-40, and the dexos™ logo and oil weight are swapped, top to bottom.

I also find it rather ridiculous that a car built 6 working days before the '19 switchover were filled with a different oil, but I suppose the engine was built and filled some time before that.
