Default Tires...Never thought of this

I had decided to go with Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires. Sport, being the key word, for my GS. The tire dealer pointed out something I didn’t think about. He asked what happens to my wheel if I have a blow out with a non run flat tire. I’ve been around long enough to have lost a few wheels because of a tire going flat. I’m going to think it over tonight and buy tires in the morning. Question is run flat or non. Opinions please?
Contis or Michelin

Purely from a rim protection issue due to blow out, I say stick with RFs. Michelin makes a few good ones to fit whatever type of driving and whatever weather you choose to drive in.

I think you answered your own question, though.

You’ll get lots of different opinions on this. There’s more to consider than just rim protection. We take mine on road trips and I don’t want to get stuck somewhere or have to carry a plug kit and compressor, so I will only use ZP tires on mine.

I had non-runflats on my C6Z and lost all the air in one a few times actually.

I barely noticed it.

The sidewalls are so short you can get by easy on a completely flat tire.

What do you mean by "get by"? You can't drive on them.

With zero pressure I could safely get to an air station.

With 15 lbs. I could make it home or to a tire store.

Of course not at 70 mph.

I've been driving since 1963. Had more than my share of flat tires but never a blowout and never ruined a wheel in all that time.
But until the Stingray, I always had a spare tire. I take the car om two week road trips every summer. In states like Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming or Montana, lots of open country with real service stations few and far between, so I'm staying with the ZP's

There are always risks no matter what you do.

I took the runflats off my C5 in 03 and haven't had a single tire problem in the intervening years even while a daily driver (still have it, still no runflats), but others have, of course.

I was pleased to see that the new runflats on the '18 are so much better so I've left them. It's just a crap-shoot. All the best, either way.

ZP. Blowout at high speed or cornering is a bad day on a non RF in a perf car

You might be able to limp to one slowly. And then what?

put over 300K on 3 Vettes with non RFT....finally last year out of town in Nashville went to head out to breakfast, got low tire warning LR....yep..it was low....had a nail in it...pulled out portable compressor, air it up, drove to breakfast then went and had it fixed. First time in all those miles and years I have had an issue. Repair was no drama....after hearing about all these tire shops who are unable or afraid to repair a runflat I will continue to do what I have been doing, carry a portable compressor and tire repair kit on trips. Along with a cellphone a SIG229

I think the farthest you will be able to limp with a completely flat Non Run Flat (as opposed to JGarland's story) is the shoulder. And then the flatbed is next.

Maybe, he will come back and tell us his experience of driving on a floppy-flat tire to safety while barely noticing?

People are comparing the RF tires of previous generations to the RF tires on the C7. The tech is different. Not worth the risk if you ask me and I have not had any concerns with the tire performance. Of course I have not compared them with other tires but I have no reason to do so either.

My point is that things have changed. What is your goal, what are you looking to improve upon?

Hi!
might be a little biased...but it comes down to peace of mind...ZP's will at least get you 55 miles completely flat, to hopefully a station. It's better than being stranded out on the road!
it doesn't hurt to carry a can of fix a flat and a small compressor though..
Keep in mind also, that the car was designed with the run flats, and the extra sidewall stiffness is important for many a factor, vs using non zp's. I've run on a few different non zp tires, and the difference is very noticeable..especially during cornering maneuvers.
We've also had several folks on track that had a nail or something in the tire, causing a flat, and instead of the tire de-beading itself, or the person going off the track due to the sudden loss of air, they managed to stay on course. sure, their session ended, but all have been able to limp it back to the pits.
below is a link to a recent testimonial from a student of ours, who probably wouldn't have made it very far on a non run flat (especially in Death Valley!)
As many have said, ultimately it comes down to personal preference!

I could not stand driving my C7 or R8 with run flat tires. It was hell. I changed them out and I could not believe at how comfortable the cars became.

Wait for the Michelin PS AS3+ ZP, coming out soon (I hope). Might be best of both worlds..

IPhone and Glock 27 fit nicely in the hideaway of my C7Z
