How fast is too fast for the street?

The correct answer is the posted limits. Speed limits are set based on studies that take into account the area and road conditions ie: heavy populated areas, business, schools and general traffic congestion....Like you I know the areas that I play in and take all that into consideration.

I second the "7 over" idea. Most of the time. Or go with the flow. Fortunately I usually find a guy in a Honda Civic ahead of me willing to selflessly blast ahead and find the radar traps

I don’t have A radar detector.Virginia.I do 55 in A 45.I will do 80 in A 55 mph zone when passing only.I will race at A traffic light til 10 miles over the speed limit then back off.I have
700 hp I don’t get many takers. With no speed detector I can only do so much. With you doing
90 in A 45 they might impound your car in this area.

It gets frustrating puttering around within the bounds of the speed limit, but it's fun to stretch once in a while merging onto the highway or blasting down a straightaway on a country road. Every time I get into the throttle though, it's always on my mind that there could be a cop sitting around the next corner just waiting to fill his monthly quota (and the county coffers).

Sports cars are not about just how fast one could drive in a straight-line. If you seek a thrill, then maybe you could try taking curves at a reasonably higher speed than posted advisory speed limit. Check your local/state laws if advisory speed limits are enforceable. Of course, safety trumps everything else on public roads.

I really don't want to see my car impounded or worse be thrown in jail so I always stay under the criminal speeding limit (no more than 20 over the posted limit). Yes, these cars have a tendency to get away from us but if you're that much of a speed junkie, you gotta track it. 90 in a 45 is totally unacceptable at any time. 90 on a highway with no other traffic in sight is a different story.

In many states,15 over the limit and they can pull your license.
Of course,15 over a limit of 45 and 15 over a limit of 70 is very diff.
For me,+5 in the city and +10 on the hwy/interstate is plenty.

The thing is I'm not sure your definition of a "safe" road to do this can be trusted. 90 in a 45 already more or less proves that. A speed limit of 45 on what you think is an 'open road clear of traffic' may be because of hazards you haven't thought of or seen. These are not limited access freeways where you might be able to make a case for traveling faster on a deserted road. For example, in my area the speed limit is often determined by the number of driveways leading onto the road. Your so-called 'open road' might have blind driveways hidden by curves. What you have done is take the law into your own hands. Doing 90 in a 45 shows us all that you cannot be trusted. You're a dangerous person to be around. I really hope you get caught.

In Virginia (Where I live) they have a "no tolerance" policy for speeding / reckless driving. For every 1 MPH you do over 90, you get one day in the big house, and it is non-negotiable. A buddy of mine had a '69 Camaro with a built big block. He got into it late at night (when nobody is around). He didn't see the cop shooting radar and was clocked at 115. He was very fortunate, since he was in the military, the cop only cited him for 95 in a 45 and the judge allowed him to exchange jail time for something like 2500 hours community service and six months with a suspended license. Even then, he had to spend almost five grand in legal fees to negotiate the "reduced" sentence.

I recently got my 2018 z06 2lz auto with pdr and i use the car for commuting since its my only vehicle. I have been using waze for the last few years and just bought an escort max 360c radar detector which uses the car's wifi to get updates. So far working Waze and the 360c TOGETHER has worked for me every single time. But there are also times when I find Im having too much fun and on a fairly empty road im hitting 90+ in a 45 zone. I guess the question is how fast can or should you go on the street while not being a hazard to everyone else out there even if you dont get a ticket or are worried about law enforcement. I have never street raced anyone.
I have to drive through Christian county to drive from Springfield, MO to Branson. 20 over gets you 48 hours in jail...PERIOD. It's automatic and no amount of crying is going to get you out before the 48 hours is up.
How far do you want to push your luck?
One highway I use a lot is two lane, with a 60 MPH speed limit, and a lot of trucks towing boats to the lake, etc. Get behind one running 55, and you nail it to pass him and as there is a lot of opposing traffic, and you can hit 80 in a blink of the eye(at least I can in my Z06 in 2nd gear). The county cops always have radar setup on that highway, but at many different locations. I just figure in an additional 10 minutes of drive time to get to Branson in case the traffic is running slow. Additional 10 minutes to get to my destination is better than 48 hours in a jail cell(plus the $$$$ to pay the fine).
Before everyone says they can't do that, the guy who told us about it, is a judge in Christian county, MO(and a fellow Corvette owner who gave us the heads up).
Point is not everyone knows the 'rules' everywhere in the country. Millions of people drive to Branson, MO each year, and I really doubt that any of them knows about the 48 jail time, since the vast majority of them are from out of state, and don't personally know the judge in Christian County, MO.
Oh, and that 20 over jail time also applies to, say, 35 MPH speed limits.
Over the years, I've run across cops in remote places you would least expect them.

I set my cruise control at typicality 5 to 7 mph over the 70 mph limit (or now 60 mph is stretches.) I am often the lead car in a pack! About 30 to 40% of the traffic is passing me, even a higher percentage in the 60 mph section! Traveling in the right lane is a hazard as there are several short entrance lane roads. In those areas I move from the middle lane to the left as some folks enter without looking and force 18 wheelers to abruptly move from the right to center lane.
Don't mind folks passing as there are many Troopers with instant on radar and it keeps my taxes lower as they are mostly from out of state going or coming from Florida!
However some come barreling down much faster than 10 mph over. Some in the right lane trying to use cars to block radar then weaving in and out of the many 18 wheels on I95. There are also some who get on my bumper in the center lane and I may slow down and let then to pass. Traveling exactly at the speed limit in the center lane would cause 90% of the traffic to pass on either side including 18 wheelers!
I've been successful staying ~7 mph over the limit keeping out of trouble and have never had a accident with another car in the almost 60 years I have been driving (looking for wood as it also takes a lot of luck!) I'll stick with my approach.

I may have hit 80 once on the Interstate's 70 zone near me. I'm not into street and road racing as some are. If you're cruising at 90 in a 45, you're the man.

I put a sign in my '67 SS396 after I received a ticket for speeding that said:
Caution: Maximum Speed For This Vehicle Shall Not Exceed Posted Limits
Didn't help much though.

WOW, if you have to ask that question, you should probably NOT OWN A Z06! How many think he takes off all the nannies too?
We all speed from time to time, but I would guess most of us never question what is safe? There are times, even a posted speed limit is not safe.
If you want to drive 90+, go rent some track time.

My primary play areas is the open roads and yes it is a risk you take no matter where you are. Some times you have to pay to play. I know what my vette can do so I never show off in populated areas.
