Default Chevy Dealer Labor

A local chevy dealership is charging me $200 to install the Z06 grille for me (Provided by me).

They said it's a 4 hour job and they would do it for $200.

I don't think it takes 4 hours to take off the bumper

What is a reasonable amount of charge to get this installed?

Thank you in advance!

Probably not 4 hours, but the entire front bumper cover of the car does have to come off.

If they are indeed using 4 hours of labor, that's only $50 per hour -- about half the hourly rate of my local chevy dealer.

Hopefully no commitment's been made, yet.
Indy has more than its fair share of HP shops being home to the 500.
Run it by one or more & see what they've to say.

Bet it'll be at least half and you'll learn dealer rates are always beyond the pale, usually gouging like hell.

I understand that. Something is wrong Dealerships usually charge $160-$180 per hour labor.

And i still don't think the entire front bumper takes 4 hours to come off.

I think they can do it in 1-2 hours max. So their price is on the expensive side.

Maybe i should ask for a second opinion

I can tell you from personal experience it's not a 4 hour job. I just did it last month. Yes, you have to take the whole nose off of the car. This was my first time doing anything of this sort and I'm not necessarily the best at this kind of stuff. I had the nose off, grille installed, and nose back on in 2 hrs. It was actually pretty easy....there are lots of good YouTube videos out there with step-by-step instructions.

I am a service manager and know alot about labor rates. However who cares what the labor rate is or how long it takes to do it. $200 to swap out the grill is a very fair price. I would pay it and be on your way. Those upper metal tabs can be a pain in the *** and getting it to line back up is not so easy. Its not to hard of a job but for $200 thats a good price. I swapped mine as well at they look great with that grill. Money well spent.

Like BMWMIKE said, a $200 quote from a dealer to do this actually isn't that bad. I'm surprised it wasn't more to be honest. However, you can absolutely do this yourself and save the $200 for your next mod.

What I am saying is who cares how the math works out as long as the price is fair. I have don this job and can tell you $200 is a very fair price to be performed at the dealership or really anywhere. If it makes you feel ok for them to say " sir we will be charging you 1 and a half hours labor time to install the grill. Our labor rate is $133.00 per hour " There you go.

I gotchya. Makes sense. I would still wanna negotiate because if labor is more than the part (suspension work excluded), then i'd feel bad.

But ill get a second opinion and get it done if they go anywhere below $200

If it is not worth $200.00 do it yourself. You are paying him for his skills, his time, and his tools. How long do you think it took him or her to learn how to work on cars?

Where have YOU been? Labor is almost always the more expensive of the two....

One of the dealers here charges $140 an hour. You would get a good deal if you do not want to do it.

I was a pipe fitter for 22 years. When we had a stainless steel pipe fabricating job
we found that the women were the better tig welders most of the time. The women had better finger dexterity or something. I know they were better then I was. The women always had to work harder to prove themselves. When I got to be foreman I would call the Union Hall and ask for women welders.

The body shop labor rate charge is usually far less than the service dept. labor rate for mechanical work. Maybe that explains the $200 estimate.

$50.00 an hour for 4-hours labor, at a Chevrolet Dealer for service work is a bargain, IMO.
