Default Clothing at Spring Mtn

Its probably going to be over 100 degrees when I go to Ron Fellows in September but I assume that most men do not wear shorts. If that assumption is correct, I am wondering if wearing my old Navy Flight suit would be a good alternative and purchasing some lightweight driving shoes such as from RJS to be comfortable. Can anyone shed some light on what is typical garb? Thanks!

Wait, the AC on the car works when it's running that hard? If nothing else, it's hell on cooling. I always turn AC off and if I'm instructing, make sure I remind students no AC and no parking brake until they leave the course.

I'm even more shocked about windows up. That's a big no-no every track I've been on.

Shorts vs. jeans aren't going to make any difference in a wreck or fire. Neither is going to squat. You need fire suits in race cars because they run fuel lines inside the cars. They're also race cars.

I wear jeans because my left knee gets scrapped up from rubbing on something (not sure what) while I'm bracing in turns.

It's clothing optional!!!!

Actually everyone will be in shorts and a t-shirt. The reason they run with the windows up is that the instructors are on a two way radio and they want you to hear what they are saying and wind noise would make it much harder.

Nomex only makes sense if you anticipate catching on fire...NATOPS says shorts are just fine!

If this is the intro course they don't run hard enough to make a difference in cooling. I had a sore left knee from bracing.

I'll piggyback this topic with a similar question...is someone likely to be flogged for opting not to purchase the real driving shoes? I have a old pair of Nike's that I love to drive in and had planned on wearing. I'm already spending a small fortune (to me) on this trip...that seems like one expense I could easily forego.

Unless that turns me into "that guy" of the class or something.

They will be fine and you won't be alone. You might be alone if you buy real driving shoes.

No need, usually "that guy" is the one that buys the new driving shoes. Only a couple people in my class wore them. I have a pair of low profile sneakers that I find better than driving shoes, more pedal feel.

Don't they have mics and headsets build into the helmets?

I've run my windows up for two laps to "cheat" once or twice for aero, but it's dangerous. Breaking a window isn't exactly easy. In fact, breaking a car window is very difficult without the right tool.

The guy ******* threw a sledge hammer at it.

No to so much for Spring Mountain, but it's especially on a car that doesn't have a door handle. Crash, fire, you're unconscious. They come to get you- they can't get to you. They break the window (if you're lucky and they can) and can't figure out how to get the damn door open. Now they're sticking their heads in a smokey car trying to feel around to find seat belt release and drag you out over the glass that is shattered everywhere and all over you. What a mess.

No they do not have Mics... The radio is wired straight into the Stereo. You have a handheld CB radio pushbutton mic. frankly you almost never need it... you really only need to listen. just do a search on YouTube for Ron Fellows you can hear the audio just fine.

The AC runs absolutely wonderful under crazy hot temps "IF" you have the Stingray/GrandSport with Manual. If you are in a Z06 A8.... you will have AC off and still be in limp mode within 2 laps (at 107 degree ambient)
