Summer Road Trip - Need Your Input

Last summer we travelled from NC to Utah to see all the national parks like Arches, Bryce, etc.. and then went to Sedona, AZ for a few days and then visited many Rte 66 sites on the way home, usually exiting somewhere off I-40, like the Conoco station in TX that was discussed earlier. YES, we made reservations well in advance for the entire trip. You almost have to for the national parks. We usually make them with AAA where you can cancel if an emergency arises. Not all, but we try.
I agree with another poster about AZ being the best for Rte 66. Standin' on the corner in Winslow AZ is so easy to get to and there is a wonderful lunch spot on the same corner along with a really nice souvenir shop (quality stuff). They play the Eagles tunes non-stop which you can hear outside 'on the corner'. The Meteor Crater just further down the road is also much improved over what it was in the past. Just so many stops but it does take time. This isn't something to rush. it has to be an easy 'chill-out' trek.

I would like to hear from those who took a long cross country roadtrip within the last two years.
How far in advance did you book your hotels? Did you make reservations for every night of the trip or did you just winged it and then just stayed at the only hotels with vacancies?
As an example just on our outbound leg of the trip to South Carolina we will be staying at 8 different hotels.
BTW, we plan to take the trip in August.

I have found if you are planning on staying at one of the iconic Route 66 motels the sooner the better for reservations. The rest aren't as critical.
Update: There were only two rooms left (today) at the Blue Swallow for a Sept. 17th check-in. Now there's only one.

In reviewing Jerry McClanahan's EZ Guide and other info about Route 66 it’s becoming clear it’s not all that easy to drive Route 66. There are tons of take exit so & so for x miles then backtrack here, take exit xx turn left here go 3 miles take road so & so for xx miles, go under hwy xx then turn left until you see the sign to town of xx, then get on Route 66 which is is only x miles long here. Also read many parts are now a gravel road.
is Route 66 this difficult to travel? What am I missing?

I almost forgot to ask if you are a AAA member. They have free Rte 66 guides/maps. We always have one for ourselves. See attached.

Highly recommend the space and rocket museum in Huntsville, Al. About 1.5 hours north of B'ham.
