Last summer we travelled from NC to Utah to see all the national parks like Arches, Bryce, etc.. and then went to Sedona, AZ for a few days and then visited many Rte 66 sites on the way home, usually exiting somewhere off I-40, like the Conoco station in TX that was discussed earlier. YES, we made reservations well in advance for the entire trip. You almost have to for the national parks. We usually make them with AAA where you can cancel if an emergency arises. Not all, but we try.
I agree with another poster about AZ being the best for Rte 66. Standin' on the corner in Winslow AZ is so easy to get to and there is a wonderful lunch spot on the same corner along with a really nice souvenir shop (quality stuff). They play the Eagles tunes non-stop which you can hear outside 'on the corner'. The Meteor Crater just further down the road is also much improved over what it was in the past. Just so many stops but it does take time. This isn't something to rush. it has to be an easy 'chill-out' trek.

How far in advance did you book your hotels? Did you make reservations for every night of the trip or did you just winged it and then just stayed at the only hotels with vacancies?

As an example just on our outbound leg of the trip to South Carolina we will be staying at 8 different hotels.

BTW, we plan to take the trip in August.
i took 2 road trips last year. one in june with the wife in the gs, the second in august solo on the harley. 5 weeks on the road total with only one hotel reservation in bowling green. zero issues finding places to stay. winging it much more of an adventure for me.

Maxie, FYI I'm going to make my reservations for Sept. at the Blue Swallow today. I did the same in 2016, and by the time we got there in Sept. '16 they were completely booked. One thing though, since they are a small place they do charge a cancellation fee.

I have found if you are planning on staying at one of the iconic Route 66 motels the sooner the better for reservations. The rest aren't as critical.

Update: There were only two rooms left (today) at the Blue Swallow for a Sept. 17th check-in. Now there's only one.

is Route 66 this difficult to travel? What am I missing?
Some parts are more difficult than others, As has been mentioned already the EZ guide is the best we have found. We traveled the entire route in 2016 and used Route-66-GPS-Turn-by-Turn software developed by Riverpilot that worked very well in keeping us on the Mother Road. A Google search will get you their website.

I almost forgot to ask if you are a AAA member. They have free Rte 66 guides/maps. We always have one for ourselves. See attached.

I called them today Dave, and it's on the way. It will be another added plus to go with all the other info. I have on Route 66. It seems that all have some little tid-bit that others don't.
