Ok I just got another headache. I was the first car and waiting for the traffic lights. An explorer hit the rear of my car. There was actually no big damage but only some scratches and a dent on the rear diffuser. I asked if the driver has driver license and insurance, he said no and asked me if I want to deal it in the near plaza. I agreed since we were blocking the traffic. Before that I let my girlfriend took a picture of his license plate, he probably did not notice that since I didn't ask my gf to do so in English. Then the guy just ran away after I got in my car. I called cop in the plaza and gave them all the information, the officer said there was a emergency in my city currently so I have to go home and wait all the officers solve the emergency first. I checked my car again after I got home and pretty sure there is only damage on the plastic diffuser, which I was going to replace with the carbon fiber part anyway. So I think I am under a dilemma. First of all, I am so pissed since that guy hit and run. And he did cause damage on my car. I am worry about that if the police write a report, the accident will probably show on the carfax, which will diminish the value of my car. If I decide to "repair" or "replace" it by myself, I will feel really unfair because the guy who hit and run does not get the punishment. It seems either way I will lost some money... Any suggestions?

True and false at the same time. If you do a TRAFFIC CRASH REPORT (civil report) it MIGHT be reported to carfax.. BUT a hit and run is a CRIMINAL report.
Soo you can have the guy arrested and not have it reported if the officer would do one report and not the other
In Illinois I believe the only time carfax is notified is if you file a claim with insurance.
Disclaimer: been an officer for almost a decade

Thank you sir. The officer said he would find that guy first and let us change the information. He said the drive might tell another story then it will become my story against his. I don't have dash camera on my car, and he said the damage doesn't mean what I said was truth( he doesn't mean I was lying)

Keep us posted. Sorry for the damage to your car. Suggestion: have someone who knows paint and body go over the rear of your car. There could be (not absolutely certain) damage beneath the surface that will show up. Just checking will give you peace of mind. Good luck.

I'd care less about Carfax, car will depreciate regardless...I'm more of the principle, he hit ya, then drove off. Not having a consequence for his action is wrong.

Oh dear god, a wall?
A couple of facts for you there Zedge..
85% of people here illegally overstay a VISA and arrive on a AIRPLANE. A wall isn't going to do anything about that.
There is no indication that the person that caused the accident was undocumented. Only that he was a douchebag, that ran.

I'd tell the guy to pay for the diffuser unless he wants to go to jail.
Hard to say without seeing the scratches etc but I'd probably scare him but let it go..
Just my opinion.
Years ago I had some young girl hit the back of my car...I buffed it out with a griots orbital amd told her not to worry about it.
She was a young kid who was truly sorry.
Can't even see it since I buffed it out...
Before the oribital buffer it looked messed up bad...
Buy the diffuser that you were going to buy anyway...and call it a day..
Sorry this happened to you. I know the feeling.

Since your gf took a picture of his license plate, why not track him down and address the situation with him.

For whatever it’s worth, accidents finding their way to carfax seems to be an extremely inexact science. It certainly shouldn’t be taken as gospel that a car with a clean car fax is accident free. I recently had someone run a carfax on a vehicle I own that was in a major accident almost 5 years ago, and it shows a clean carfax. I would never use concern for an accident showing up on a carfax as a reason to not report it.

I'm surprised the officer seems more concerned with what may show up on your C7's Carfax than writing up a criminal report to perhaps aid in catching and punishing the 'hit & run' driver.

Press the issue with the police to find him. Make him pay for both damaging your property and being a douche for leaving the scene. You tried to be the better person and the guy took advantage of the situation. Lessons aren’t learned by people like that, especially if there is not any consequences for his actions.
Your car will depreciate regardless of the accident. Typically IF it’s reported on car fax or any other VIN history report, it will list the referencing document number and a very short description of the damage, (light impact to rear bumper, heavy impact to front right, disabling collision) and anyone who knows even a little about vehicles will see that and be able to tell what kind of damage the car had.

Down here in Florida, the hit and run is what usually occurs. But now they are learning a new twist. My son got into a fender bender a few weeks ago. The two girls were super hot and he did NOT call the cops - dumba$$. They could not speak any English except "no Policia". He took pictures of all their IDs, registration and insurance, car plates. Reported to our insurance and they were all fake.
Damn right we need our wall.
