Yeah crazy I know.

FWIW it's warned not to use brake cleaner on calipers as it can eat that paint!

When I changed to Carbotech 1521 brake pads on my 2014 C7 Z51 and my Grand Sport, I first used Dawn and water. Then used a 3M abrasive pad on the rotor surface. Then used brake cleaner on a rag and wiped the rotors. I used it very sparingly, not letting it get near the calipers. Then washed the rotors and calipers with rubbing alcohol all caught in a drain pan.

If I use brake cleaner on the calipers I immediately follow with Windex.

FWIW, chlorinated brake cleaner doesn't attack paint, or if it does, it's very slow acting. I use it all the time even with painted rotor hats and painted calipers. I still follow up cleaning any painted surfaces with at least a good rinse with water, but maybe I'm a little paranoid and overprotective.

The non-chlorinated brake cleaner is one of the fastest and most thorough paint removers I've ever seen. I won't have that stuff in my shop because of the potential for it to land on painted surfaces and cause damage (spots if its' just overspray or drips).

strip the complete barrel of the grey flat paint and you have chrome all the way back including the lip that you can see from the outside of the wheel that stains. Easy to clean and will never stain because its chrome.

For those interested, I stumbled across a very easy and effective way to clean the barrels. Believe it or not......a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.....takes everything but the big clumps off quickly without scrubbing.

Whoa that looks great.

Magic Erasers are slightly abrasive. Do you not have scratch marks inside the barrels?

BJ- That looks pretty impressive. What process did you use to achieve that?

Brushable aircraft automotive paint stripper, brush on multiple coats after first coat bubbles up paint. Make a syrup like consistency of the bubbled paint by brushing on a second coat and then a 3rd coat of stripper. Rag it off , towel it off (put chemical gloves on) till all is gone. You will end up with a film that you remove with a lacquer thinner drenched clean rag and even triple o super fine steel wool on the barrel only. Polish or liquid wax for the finale.
Do it outside or in a fully opened bay.. the fumes are tough.

The stripper doesn't bother the wheel weights, but I wouldn't drown the weights in stripper either.

The inside of the barrels is not a smooth surface anyway like a body panel. It has slight groves in it. If there were any slight scratches, no one would ever see them.

Right, the barrels show all the machining lines in the aluminum from the machining process. Its a nice softened sheen look that has a flash coat of chrome on it and is easy to clean and does not stain. If yoy remove the paint from the barrels on painted wheels, you would see the same machining on the natural aluminum surface. Much easier to maintain than flat grey paint.
