Default Orange Peel Paint

I’ve got a 2018 2LT, Torch Red, that was built & delivered after the factory re-opened. I fully expected that the car would be painted in the new state of the art paint shop but obviously was not. I’ve got orange peel all over the car. Apparently the car was built with old panels. Chevy has been outstanding in their responsiveness to the problem. They asked me to take it to the dealer for evaluation twice now. 1st time the service mgr acknowledged the problem. It’s back there again for another evaluation.

chevy 1st tossed out the idea of repainting my Vette but I rejected that out of hand. A repaint at some shop is not the same as a factory paint job.

Has anyone experienced similar problems and how was it handled? Any suggestions on what to do? Again Chevy has been very responsive but no solution yet.

Thanks for your input.

Has GM verified it wasn't painted in the new paint shop?

Default Orange Peel

they haven’t stated it wasn’t built in the new shop but if that’s what they’re turning out they spent all that money for nothing!

True. In most cases it's better.

You can have it wet sanded and buffed to remove the orange peel, which is not a job for a DIY-er.

OP was not necessarily going away with the new shop. Someone posted previously that all new cars from the new paint shop have some paperwork that shows it.

You're going to need to make a choice at some point. The paint on these cars sis not thick enough for a color sanding without risk.

So if they want to paint your car, that is probably one voice that I'm not so sure I would discount if the shop is good. The other is to put up with the OP.

The other choice is see if they would get you another car too I guess. But if it is bad as you're making it I wouldn't have accepted delivery.

It's all relative to your sensitivity to OP, color of the car and how bad it really is.

This is going to sound a little crazzy but here it goes..

Has it changed from the day you picked it up? If yes then fight it..

I do not know if Orange peel is specifically named in the warranty, does it say "there will be no orange peel in the paint"

I know everyone keeps saying the price of the car and it's a corvette and a hundred other things after the fact... But I do not see the paint changing after you signed for and inspected the car...

Default Orange Peel

I think that anyone has the reasonable expectation that a car, regardless of price, will be delivered free of defects. I picked the Vette up in the snow with poor light. The problem was reported soon after arriving home.

I agree with you! I think you should sell that hunk of junk to me, right now! I'll give you $500.00 for it. That's $400.00 more than any dealer in their right mind would give you for a car with "orange peel" paint. PM me and I'll send you my info. Do you want cash or check?

J/K . Just send that bad boy to a good detail shop and have them do a paint correction and ceramic coat. It'll look as good as a car twice as expensive once they're done with it. Unless you have a problem with the paint peeling or chipping off, there is no reason to be alarmed by a little bit of orange peel. Every production car has it.

Ok, I looked this up. I think my ‘14 Vette is as described with the “orange peel” roughness. However, I just went out and compared it to my dad’s 2018 Mustang GT that happened to be parked next to my Vette, and his is the exact same way. I’m having paint correction and ceramic coating done on my Vette later this week, so I’ll look and see if that makes a difference or not. But the car looks ok to me. My other cars have a “better” paint job from the factory I guess. But I don’t usually stand 2 feet away from my car and squint at it, so I’ll be fine.

this is sort of funny, but I went with my Dad when he took delivery of his brand new 2018 Mustang GT. When we went to go over it in the little garage where “delivery” happened, the head of the delearship told my dad, “we have been all over the car, and have only found TWO imperfections!” Said it so mater of factly, that it seemed normal. He pointed them out to my dad, said one would buff right out and the other nick would have to be repainted, but he recommended that nothing be done with it as it was so small and he should just keep the factory paint intact.

I was floored. But my dad was so excited for his personal dream car and didn’t seem to care that I didn’t say anything. Also, my last five car purchases had all been Porsche’s and my 911 Turbo was sitting outside, so I felt really out of place nitpicking on my dad’s delivery of his new Mustang. I just thought to myself, goodness, is this really what buying a new Ford is like? I certainly would have outright refused the car myself. But again, I’m dealing with apples and “oranges” here.

Now, huffing and puffing ego aside, my dad LOVES his Mustang, and it has been a great car for him, he has even driven it to California and back, been rear ended and had the bumper replaced. Life goes on, it’s the inside parts of the car that really matter, not the plastic bits.

Default Orange Peel

First thanks for your input, some good some not so good. All production vehicles do not have OP. I’ve got 2 cars in my garage that don’t, a MB & a BMW, both 2017.

I think my worst case is to take the suggestion that I get a paint correction but skip the sealant. I hear the sealant is not as good as advertised but I could be convinced if I saw a vehicle that had been sealed.

Hopefully Chevy will come through, only time will tell.

It's kind of why I said take advantage of the free paint job if they will give it.

I think this is false. Unless you had paint correction done, your BMW and MB both have orange peel. You probably just haven’t noticed it, or they are in a color that doesn’t show it as much.
