I bought my 2018 back in October 2017. My initial free trial has run out since. According to an email with my March diagnostics report this is what you get free on the basic plan.....
"You've got OnStar Basic Connectivity, which includes limited vehicle app services like remote start, lock and unlock; a monthly Advanced Diagnostics report; OnStar Smart Driver and more, at no cost. "
This is right from the email they sent me. You should get a monthly diagnostic report via email.

It’s funny. My car has been hibernating for the winter so my Onstar ran out too. Come to think of it I think I got the first diagnostic report and haven’t gotten anything since. I am assuming the car needs to run to get the reports though

That is correct, about 7 days after the car has not been started it goes into complete hibernation and Onstar cannot access the car’s systems.

I'm under the impression that the free basic plan is good for 5 years. I'm only using it in case I need a remote unlock. If I recall you can opt out of the advisories.
