Default Base Car Ride With/Without MRC

Has anyone driven a base car (non-Z51, non-GS) back to back with Magnetic Ride Control in Tour mode and without Magnetic Ride Control? I am wondering if the base shocks without MRC have the same ride characteristics as MRC shocks in Tour mode.

I would like to learn about this as well. From the perspective of Z51/MRC.

Find a Chevrolet dealer that will let you drive what you like back to back.

In my opinion, the base Stingray shocks are closer to the Sport setting on MRC, and stiffer than Tour mode.

I had MRC on my C6, and I left it in Tour mode 99% of the time. The only time I clicked over to Sport was on smooth, well maintained roads. I found the car a bit too stiff if the road surface was anything less than "smooth". Pretty much the same observation in my 2014 Cadillac VSport.

well, funny you should mention. 2 Year’s ago when I wanted to drive one, 2 out of three locals were dicks about test drives. But I may try.

This is one of those questions that only you can answer for yourself. Guys who have paid for the MRC option will swear by it and those of us who don't have it don't miss it. My base, 3LT C7 rides beautifully in Tour mode, even on questionable roads. In Sport mode it stiffens up a bit and, although I rarely use Track mode, I suspect it gets even stiffer.

You need to find a local Corvette Forum member or Corvette Club member with MRC and try it for yourself.

Base Stingray ride is closer to Sport in a Z51, but not quite as stiff or firm. Touring is more compliant or softer than base.

By your statement above doesn’t sound like you have MSRC so confused you think the suspension changes under different driving modes...

I agree. That's why I was hoping to hear from people who have driven both, cars with and without MRC back to back or close to it.

It is difficult to get test drives, let alone ones with and without a suspension option. We are given so little information by Chevrolet, it is difficult to make an informed decision. I don't even know if they use the same spring rates between non-MRC and MRC cars.

I'm in a similar situation. Will be anxious to hear what our folks think. Would need to travel a ways to test the car I'm interested in.

My 2014 (owned for 2 years) did not have MRC and my 2017 does. If you can afford it, get it. And with the new upgrade the tour mode is way more pleasant than my 2014 in any mode. As you know, in a non-MRC no suspension calibration is changed in any mode change.

Dave, Respectfully I have to disagree with you on this. I test drove a '15 coupe Z51 before I bought my '16 base car, and the ride was much better than the Z51 car IMHO. The base does have a solid ride, but not what I would call stiff. It actually rides better than my previous C6 with mag ride. And the C7 base is extremely more comfortable on long road trips than my old C6.

OP, ride comfort is quite subjective. As you can see what I consider solid Dave considers stiff. Everyone's "Buttometer" registers differently. As stated, if possible test drive each. It's difficult for others to tell you what you will like.

Hmmmm. If you don't have MSRC then how can there be a difference with the ride when you "switch modes". The phantom shock effect! Clueless.

Yes, but you and I are reading it again. And I must admit I'm interested in this new thread on this issue.

FWIW, I have a non-Z51 with MSRC and I'm glad I went with it!

Looking forward to getting the MSRC update performed as i hear it only makes it even better (at least according tomost that have posted), but of course YMMV.

DITTO!

After I put down $1,000.00 deposit to buy my new one, I got to drive it to the back of the Chev. dealer's lot for storage, until paying in full for it 2-weeks later. None of 'em ever offered a test-drive.

Mine's got MSRC, without the MSRC upgrade. Have no idea what a non-MSRC rides like....

Were both the cars base suspension or Z51?

Thanks, LimeRay (and TXshaggy). I did, indeed misspeak. Obviously, the steering and throttle response "tighten up" giving the impression that the whole vehicle tightens up.

One area the OP didn't ask about and, perhaps, should be included in his inquiry is "handling." I can attest to the fact that adding Z51 anti-sway bars front and rear made a huge difference in my base car's ability to remain flat and stable on twisty roads. Highly recommended for non-Z51 base models!

Both what I like to call........non-Z51. I added the Z51 sway bars to my 2017 as I do track the car.

The only thing that I could share is that I was coming out of a '14 Camaro ZL1 with standard MRC shocks suspension, but me and my wife felt in love with a '14 Corvette Z51 without the MRC, I thought that the ride was going to be terrible harsh, but not at all, we are very satisfied with our C7 Stingray Z51 and we don't missed the MRC shocks suspension. Very well balanced sport car.
