Painting Roof Rails on a clear top
I want to paint the rails on my clear top. My local Corvette center has never painted a clear top and was not sure if the paint would stick. Those that have done it, was a special paint or process used ?

Well I think the body colored spears look amazing, and apparently so do alot of people and GM.
A few people here have had it done and there was mention of some shops being hesitant to do so, but for the ones who did have it painted I haven't heard of any issues as of yet. I'd imagine the shop would have to sand the rails so there's enough tooth for the primer to adhere.

I have seen a car with the A-pillars painted and after seeing it I can see why the car comes black from the factory. Keep in mind, the actual pillars are mostly inside of the car.

Glad you asked this question. Anxious to read all replies, as this is something I’ve been considering. I like the look, but my local dealer’s body shop is hesitant to try it. Said they’d never done one, and have concerns about adhesion.

I took my Little Blue Vette to my Corvette body guy to have him paint those spears to match body color. He told me that there is a special adhesive that should be applied before painting those clear tops that he could not locate. So rather than using something else, he declined to paint it. I told him to please keep looking for it.

Adhesion Promoter from automotive touchup $9.95
Product Description
12 oz adhesion promoter clear primer for use over bare plastic, chrome, vinyl, galvanized metal, fiberglass, aluminum, and glass. It remains flexible and has better adhesion to plastic than regular primer.
I used this. No problem with peeling or anything. Been about 21 months since I applied it.

Painting "plastic" is hardly new. Most rattle-can companies make plastic-friendly paints so I cannot see why a competent paint facility cannot figure it out... if they take the time and trouble. Bet, they'd have no problems painting your entire car, though.
