Default Powerstop Z23 v Z26

On the C7 Stingray (Non Z51) for just daily driving did the Powerstop brakes make a difference in dust? Any squeal? Which ones did you go with the Z23 or the Z26 and why? Would you buy them again?

The Base Stingray, unlike the Z51 or GS & Z06, make very little dust. I would be surprised if the Powerstops or Carbotechs make less dust than the non-Z51 brakes.

Well thats just not true.... the base stingray pads make plenty of dust maybe not as much as the others but still plenty. When comparing them to the power stops they create a lot more dust.

I use z23’s on my current hellcat. They stop great with 0 dust. I believe the z26 are more prone to squeal as I believe they are also the more track focused pad. The z23’s are great for daily driving, and don’t squeal. Actually they do squeal on a cold morning when backing out of the driveway literally once for a second during the first brake pedal press. After that they don’t.

I have not found this on my '14 base which stay fairly clean including the barrels. Best standard brake I ever had on Corvette! The Powerstops Z26 with steel shim have tinted my rotors brown on my 17 Z06 But otherwise I like them and they are as clean as the base car now.

I would like to find the compound used on the base stingray pads to use on the Z06. Rather than the powerstops.

FWIW, I came across the following when I was researching pads. This person apparently emailed PowerStop regarding the z23 vs. z26 pads. Here is what he reported back:

"Z23 and Z26 use the same friction material in the pad itself
They are both low dusting and will dust the same amount as they are the same friction material
Backing plate shim on Z23 is rubberized and backing plate shim on Z26 is stainless steel
The Z26 pad will tolerate higher heat due to the SS backing plate
Both pads are low noise but I would suspect that the Z23 may be even better in the noise department due to the rubberized shim (just a guess here)
"

(Sorry I don't have the link handy, nor can I properly attribute the author -- just copied the text at the time and saved it away for my future reference)

Went with Z23 for the noise supression, and yes would buy them again. No dust/squeal/browning. They are very good daily driving pads. Powerstop is a reputable company. If you look at the posters saying they turn the rotors brown, it's the same 2-3 people who had a bad experience. They have an apparent axe to grind in every single powerstop thread.

I chose the Z23 as I prefer a rubberized shim. I also have never had the "brown rotor" issue. These pads are very low dust and I am pleased with their performance.

Much better than the brown wheels and shocks the stock ones do!

Instead of a lot dust going everywhere all over your wheels and everywhere in your wheel house and car.
They all dust to some extent don't kid yourself! The powerstop dusts less and has a very fine brown dust that stays on the rotor.

But almost none anywhere else. Plus they are a high temp pad.

I recommend them highly!

I put the Z23's on my CTS4 last year and now have about 5,000 miles on them. No dust, no noise, no nothing but great stopping power. The 23's are going on my 16 this summer....FWIW, I like them.

The non-Z07 (base) brake pad for Z06/GS is very much a part of the problem, believe me. My GS was a dust machine before installing Z26 pads.

I never understood the "brown rotor" hysteria infecting a few PS buyers, as if mine were ever brown it was very slight and after a few months disappeared entirely. In fact, had I not read about the brown-pad syndrome in this forum I would never have even had thoughts about it. As it was, after thorough inspection I never did see anything to get my dander up about, if indeed there was any tone change at all.

Just ordered up the Z23 pads yesterday. Finally got sick of the brake dust. Went with the Z23 after research as the only difference between them and the Z26 as stated above was the backing plate. $77 total (including shipping!) from Rock Auto for fronts and rears. Can’t beat the price

The brown stain on the rotors can not be removed with water. There is too much copper in the pads and it transfers to the rotors. The only to remove it to sand it off. I found the best way to remove it using red 3M Scotch-Brite pads and a sander. I bought the Power Stop Pads because of the price. And all i got was trouble. My rotors started turning brown and had a hard time contacting them and when i did they told me it was rust. At that time my car had 2000 miles never driven it the rain and no washed with water. I did get another set of pads from them after phone calls and e-mails but did not put them on. Spend the money and get the Carbotech pads !!!!

I have the Z26's on my Z06. Love them; practically no dust, no browning. And quiet.

I have the Z26 and like them. A month after I first put them on they developed a squeal on the first cold low speed stop in the morning then quiet after. I did not prep the rotors. So about 6 weeks ago I took the fronts off and sanded the rotors with my vibrating multi-tool, reassembled and squeal is totally and permanently gone. Very minimal dust and the browning isn't all that bad. I'd get them again.

The base stingray pad is the one I would desire not Z06 at all! They are The pad compound of the std. stingray. Have been excellent on my 14.

I shouldn't have used the word "base" there. What I was trying to say is that the non-Z07 GS/Z06 pads are soft and create copious amounts of dust. My 2015 base Stingray was far better and I never felt the need to replace the pads.
