If you had the car "locked" the fuel door is also locked. When you pull into a gas station be sure you "unlock" the car otherwise you can't unlock the fuel door. This happened to me once with my 2014.

This is a known issue. Some, like me, have inserted a "plug" to prevent door from locking. You may have to remove door. Do a search and you will find threads on how to remove door.

Found the thread. I pulled the rear inner fender liner out and disconnected the plastic actuator rod from the door. Works mechanically now.

Yup, every time I pull into the Shell station and go in to run my rewards card my car locks automatically...I need to unlock it with the key fob and door will open. no big deal but first couple times I was scratching my head about it.

Removing the whole door at the gas station is not so crazy...some have had to do just that..
I did not even want to hear the actuator cycle, so instead of removing the locking pin, I just removed the whole actuator.. It just clips in.

You can easily do a one-time defeat of Passive Locking. After opening the door, push the Unlock button again and hold for about 5 seconds. The car will chime three (?) times and then will not Passive Lock again until the next ignition cycle.
That not only allows opening the gas door, but also keeps from locking my wife in the car and her setting off the interior motion alarm.

It has happened intermittently to me in my previous '14, my solution was to press the fob unlock button when it would not open, then it unlocked every time. So far it has not happened in my '18.
BTW, I have never had either C7 programmed in passive lock.

Audi had the same problem on cars they made 10 years ago. At least they were nice enough to spend the extra $0.06 to hide a manual release cable in the trunk.

I had the gas door give me difficulty one time on my 2014. I locked the car, unlocked with the key fob. Running that cycle opened it. Haven't had the problem in over a year.

Did not have a problem with my 2014 C7 for 3 1/2 years but several times my Grand Sport required multiple unlock presses on my FOB to unlock the gas door. Decided it was time for the fix mentioned several years ago "before I was locked out" when I was far from home and close to empty!
Since a pic is worth 1000 words- here are two!
Pic is from old forum post. I looked through my "stash of stuff you might need some day" and found a Scrivet that fit!
Note, you can open the door and put your hand over the locking pin. Activate the lock with your key FOB. You'll see it only comes out for about a second and your hand can easily hold it back. So there is no excess load put on the mechanism. Can revert back by just removing the Scrivet (or any plastic plug that fits snug.)
Hole in door lid where locking pin inserts.
