I-pass or EZ-pass toll device question
Hi. On my new 2019 Vette - will the electronic toll device work if I put it high on the back hatch window close to the roof line? Will the black lines and dots block it from detection? I have had it on the front window on other cars but, would like to hide it from view more.

Hard to say without trying it. However, I suspect the reader may not see it if it is on the rear of the car. The EZ pass RFID tag is powered by the radio waves emitted by the EZ pass receiver and if the car body blocks or reduces the signal strength the RFID tag may not broadcast its ID or its broadcast may be blocked by the structure of the car. Corvettes don't have a lot of metal in them but the rear window is surrounded by the metal B pillar where the hinges attach to the halo. Sometimes the windows themselves will have a thin metal layer that will block or reduce the radio waves.
Put the EZ pass on the rear window where you want it to go and then go to a booth that permits hand payment or EZ pass and see if the gate will lift.

Yeah I don't think its going to work. Not because it cant but because the sensors looking for it will be looking at the front window. I never actually tried it though.

I have Quick Pass. However, the unit I have in the Vette is compatible with all electronic toll services in the US including E-Z Pass.
I leave it on the front seat. Sometimes it's turned upside down, sometimes it's backwards, it makes no difference and it always works. When I picked up the unit, they gave me a special bag to take it home because they claimed it will work in the glove compartment. My guess is anything that close to the outside of the car won't fail but I never tried putting it in the back of the car.

When I lived in San Francisco, we had seven toll bridges. As long as your tag was registered, you didn't even need the electronic toll device. The camera would take a picture of your plate and charge your account. I never used mine.
I just checked the toll system in your area. You also have video camera plate readers, but starting in 2018, if you have more than five in a month, you are charged the cash rate. That sucks.
The device is electronic and uses RF signals. It doesn't care if the windshield is black across the top. When I used to carry it on my motorcycle, it was inside of my tank bag. It worked just fine. Just put it where you want and see if the reader can interrogate it.

I have the black ez-pass that you are "supposed" to screw into your front license plate. If you place it on the dash, way towards the front (near the windshield) it's barely noticeable - but I only throw it up there when I'm going to go through tolls.

I used to put my pass on the dash until I noticed it was beeping in places where it shouldn't like the airport drop off where there are no tolls, and on the interstate. The State puts readers on the highway to calculate traffic speed and who knows what else. I don't want to be tracked every place I go. I started keeping mine in a Mylar bag in the glove box so it couldn't be read. Then took it out altogether when I found out they use the cameras on the toll booths to debit your account if you don't have a EZ pass.

As long as your plate is on file with the receiver you'll be fine. I run one I-pass for a few vehicles and just leave it in my daily. They will charge you extra (non I-pass prices) if you go through like 10-15 tolls a month or something like that. They will send you a warning first though.

I'm glad you posted this. Not all transponders are the same.
Here's what I know about Quick Pass transponders. The units that peal and attach to the windshield are not the same as the units in the plastic box. The windshield peal and stick must be placed on the windshield to work reliably. For us in NC, the window units will not work with all systems i.e. it won't work with EZ pass. However, the larger unit in the plastic box, the one I have in the Vette works with any system and can be placed pretty much anywhere in the car. This tells me the design of the electronics is different (Captain Obvious). I wouldn't be surprised if other systems have different designs available, some being location specific, and some not so much.

I have the EZ Pass unit that is supposed to be mounted along the top of the windshield behind the rear view mirror. I keep mine in the "Gun Compartment" behind the infotainment screen and so far it has been working fine.

I put mine behind the video screen. Works every time.
