Default What is that structure underneath my car?

For the past couple of days, I had noticed a noise and sensation that my car was dragging something underneath it while driving at low speeds (< 10 mph) and which was not noticeable at speeds >10 mph. So, I finally took a look under my car and saw this - picture attached. Any idea what structure that is? Thank you!

You are dragging something probably the center section of the air deflector.

It’s part of the undercarriage air deflector. Looks like the rearward fasteners are missing. Did you have your car serviced recently... maybe an oil change, or whatever? If so, then perhaps the tech forgot to refasten it. Here’s a pic to better illustrate the piece.

"... For the past couple of days..."

Let me get this straight.... you had something audibly dragging for a "couple days" and waited that long to check it?!?

Happened to me last week. It's the rubber air dam that frequently scrapes on driveways or speed bumps which has torn loose from its moorings. IT'S NOT AS IF YOU CAN HEAR IT OR SEE IT. You're driving the car, not peering beneath it. I was with a group of other vettes whose drivers told me what they could see. I cut the piece off very easily with a sharp knife. Consensus on this forum after my inquiry was that it isn't a big deal and need not be replaced.

It was exactly that. It was partially torn and I'm getting it replaced. Thank you very much.

LOL - I was thinking the same thing. My *** would have had the car pulled over ASAP and looking under it to see what in the hell is going on.

I know the arguments about 'the engineers put them there for a reason', and that's true. But for the street I took mine off of our Z51, and off of our current C7 too. Got tired of them scraping on our driveway and the steep roads down off of our home - and I've seen a picture or two where the little 'winglets' scraped so hard that it cracked the larger plastic piece that either hooks up to or becomes the wheel well liner. We've put thousands of miles on our C7s with them off, and we've never spiraled out of control, overheated brakes, and our gas mileage is just fine (all arguments for leaving them on).

Btw, I paid it out of pocket. I dunno why the bill says insurance paid though.

This was mine. It's partially torn, so I'm getting the whole thing replaced.

As I stated above, you wouldn't even know unless someone else told you. The sound it makes is not loud enough for you to hear when inside the car. You can't see it unless you peer underneath the car. Even after I was told "something is dragging beneath your car" I STILL could not hear it or detect it in any way. Unless you are blessed with Super Hearing, you wouldn't either. It didn't hurt a thing for me to wait until I got stopped at a safe place so I could cut it off.

Perhaps your circumstance was slightly different than the OP's, because the OP clearly indicated that he heard and felt something dragging as noted in his initial post...

He also stated it was "not noticeable above 10 mph." He's lucky he heard it at all.

They are one of the reasons spare parts are for sale. Not everybody is a gearhead.
