Thanks for the suggestion, but yeah...my sockets won't fit into that small space, and when I switched to the 6-point wrench, the rounding continued...that's when I stopped.
A box end wrench will fit and provide the security of a socket.

Is/was there a crush ring copper washer under the bolt head? One tip that may help in similar situations is to lightly heat up the bolt with a blow torch with a few passes. Heating makes them turn loose as well.
