Default Warning! GS Tires = Monkey and the football scenario

What a horrible feeling when one watches a frustrated tech digging into your Vettes tires/wheels like its the enemy.
Day 1= Local " tire shop" failed at replacing my 2017 GS tires (17k miles). I lasted a little over 2hrs watching them wrestle those tires and wheels and then left when they brought out the giant can of lube and ratchet strap, couldn't watch anymore. A total of 7 hrs and still no progress.
Day 2= I am going in this morning with a 20in bicycle tube and my gloves to give them a hand. Hunter equipment and the guys working on this are supposedly "experienced" with performance tires and wheels. If they can't set the beads this morning, I think I'll try and find another shop. Probably go through the same scenario all over again, frustrated! Sad thing is, there are very few shops here with the equipment/experience required for these horrendous-to-mount Michelin PSS tires.

Just venting and warning those that have not had to change these tires yet.

Discount Tire is where you should go - they have the machine and the know-how to deal with GS wheels and tires and is where I take mine (including my first full set of tires swap I did two months ago).

All depends on who is working there. Last year while getting my truck tires rotated, watched the tech wrestle with a Z06 rear tire. They were struggling bad.

Discount Tire did all 4 of mine within an hour, using 2 x manual jacks on each side (using their pucks).

My local Discount Tires in VA replaced 4 tires on my GS in 1 hour. Great clean job.

I don't know why people struggle so much with low profile tires. Then again, those are the only types of tires I ever mount.

Probably because they spend the majority of their day doing SUVs and crossovers.

Check with your Chevrolet dealer too … mine just had the newest tire changing equipment installed at the dealership specifically to handle GS and Z06 wheels. Plus they said they would price match!

All hail the butyl rubber industry. The 20in bicycle tube worked like a champ. Sealed up with a little finagling, then easily slid out after the bead set.
So if you are presented with this tire mounting issue, consider bringing a few 20in bicycle tube to your next tire change.

Call around a few Discount Tires and ask if someone has experience with the tires/car. I made sure before taking mine in. They got it done in an hour with 0 scratches or struggle.

Do you have a link to a video or description of what you're talking about? It sounds interesting.

Use soapy water on the tube for easier removal

I went thru the same thing at my local Discount Tire store. Watched two techs work for and hour. They finally gave up. Said it was the 2nd GS they had problems with.

Took it to Suburban Chev and the tech was done in 15 minutes including the balance.

Yeah, Discount Tire - I used them for more than 20 years until the most experienced person, the manager remounted my tires after I had the wheels powdercoated. He sliced one bead, and ripped the sidewall on another. I got to pay $250 for the privilege, and they would not fess up and I had to pay for the replacement.

This last spring I went through the same torcher. Two days and three tire businesses later, the last being the local Chevrolet dealership finally got all four tires mounted. It still took several hours for the dealership employee to finish the job. I am not sure they used the bike tire trick, but I plan on passing that info on to all those in our club with C7 ZO6s and GSs. Good info, thanks!

On a related note . . . how bad did they scratch the rims taking off the weights? I was actually thinking of taking mine off at home based on my last experience. . .
