Default Steering Wheel lock

Saturday morning I was installing my front stage two splitter and winglets, and I needed a little clearance to access the screws at the front of the wheelhouse. Instead of removing the front wheels I decided to just turn them all the way left and then all the way right. I haven't owned a late model car in quite some time, and I realized that there's no longer a steering wheel lock when It's in park! When did the manufacturers delete this feature? Is it on most modern vehicles? I've always thought it was a handy feature when towing a car from the back end, But of course C7 Corvettes only use flatbed wreckers now. Maybe It's just a cost saving measure and one less mechanical thing to go wrong?

Steering wheel locks went away when keys went away and fobs and start buttons were invented. It's not a recent thing.

Interesting. In 2+ years of ownership I hadn't noticed there is no steering wheel lock.

You should NEVER rely on the steering column lock to tow a car backwards. The only thing locking the wheels from turning is a very small piece of metal in the steering column, which can easily be broken by force from the wheels.

In the C5 and early C6 -- the electric column lock was a constant source of failure, and when it did fail, the car was disabled. A whole cottage industry was spawned, creating "Column Lock Eliminators".

"Electric Column Lock" -- Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say.
