Default Old Mechanic's trick

Place a rag over your lug wrench or impact socket when you remove and install your wheel Lugs,...….it don't cost nothing, and it helps prevent marring your lug nuts! I doubt the dealership does this, but some of us ****-retentive types do (you know who you are)Lol! The photos shows my Dodge, but it works on all types.

I've used plastic grocery bags and they work well too.

Great idea for sure...but isn't it true that most of all lug damage occurs when using an impact wrench?

Lol … that's not an old mechanics trick. You just invented that because your 4-way doesn't fit right. Not that there's anything wrong with improvising.

I would use this tip, but not sure if I qualify as an Old Mechanic yet... too bad everyone can't use it.

Also on ebay, the coated outside is great for the wheel but the lugnuts could still be damaged. Probably putting nylon inside does not hold up, especially to an impact.

I purchased the "corvette lug socket" and the plastic liner stays on the lug nut and must be taken off after the metal socket is removed.

^^^^

Bought one for my C6 ~10 years ago and it works great! Been using on 3 Vettes. Unlike most of the cheap ones sold that just coat the outside of the socket with plastic and may have a colored BUT steel insert inside (really designed for air impact wrench use) this has a special hard plastic in the center.

The only place I have seen recently is in a Porsche Aftermarket website so was ~$35.
It is not for air impact wrenches and I never felt a need to have a plastic coated outside as with a manual wrench it does not hit the wheel. If I was concerned would just wrap with electrical tape!

Yep coated on the outside where if using a none air powered wrench its not needed! There are many on Amazon and eBay saying the same. I find the descriptions on the package and ads very deceptive as some have colored insides so a "mechanic" using and air wrench can pick the correct size quickly. But the wording makes it appear that magnetic steel inside is plastic! Does nothing to protect the lugs! At least I have not seen any cheap ones that have plastic inside.

I wrap my lug wrenches with masking tape. Its cheap easy protection for the wheels and you can use different colors for various sizes, or even write on them with a Sharpie. I never use an air wrench on my Vette but a battery powered impact or drill spins the loose lugs on and off quickly while maintaining control.
