Skip Shift Eliminators are down to ~$15. Had one on my C6, 2014 C7 then installed on my Grand Sport when I brought it home when installing ceramic brake pads as the rear was jacked up.

Watched a gal on “All Girls Garage” TV show install one real time in 1 minute. In fairness car was on a lift and engine had not run for a while. Need to have the exhaust pipe cold but it’s a simple remove one plug. Installed the supplied resister that comes in a matching plug to that removed. It just fools the computer to think it activated the blocking solenoid! Car does not know it is not connected. No CEL etc.

Have a wife that tells me when to shift when she is in the Vette, which fortunately is very seldom! Don’t need a computer telling me the same!

While on this topic of gears and shifting...... which gears in Z51 would be 1:1 and which are true overdrive? M7.
Thanks.

^^^^

4th is direct drive and there are 3 overdrives.
These are the ratio's for a Z51 an Grand Sport. Both have a differential ratio of 3:42:1 as apposed to an A8 which is 2.41:1
4th = 1:1
5th = 0.71:1
6th = 0.57:1
7th = 0.48:1

Looks like I was a little off on the 7th gear highway rpm.

Downshifting from 4th to 3rd coming into turn 1 at club motorsports at about 135mph.

If you get it up to 90 mph (not wise in Virginia, by the way), the engine is only turning about 2,000 RPMs.

I know the M7 has that "1st to 4th" feature - but I find it to be quite annoying. The rev-match option is neat, but you have to activate it every time you start the car. We are fortunate enough that we were able to get our C7 cars with a stick-shift. From what I understand, the C8 will be automatic only.
Hmm the Owner's Manual says for best gas mileage shift to 4th at 17 mph. It says shift to 7th at 45 mph.

Those are 750 rpm at 17 mph in 4th and 950 mph in 7th. I would not operate the engine there BUT GM says it's fine!

Frankly I would not drive the C7 with skip shift! Not as bad as my C6 but ship shift eliminators are available now for `$15! See my post #21 on this Thread! Get one and don't be annoyed again!

PS: Correct the C8 will have a Tremic transaxle (same folks who build the M7) dual clutch standard trans that the computer will operate. Just like Ferrari! I'm not happy as it will be my first none 3rd pedal car I've owned as a DD! However at least it's not GM 8 or more gear "slush box" so it won't overheat! It will use constant mesh, efficient helical spur gears and be in the next gear when one clutch disengages and the other engages. We'll see.

I don't know that GM every "intended you to use all the gears with a high torque 6.2 liter engine with variable cam timing. You use the gears necessary to accomplish the objective. They give you 3 overdrives topic what fits the situation best.

Yep when I had a 3 on the floor in my '41 Ford Coupe, the 3 on the tree with my '50 Ford could not wait for my 1st 4 speed. Used them all. But with my 1st "7 speed," a Dodge Colt Turbo and my 2nd an '88 Vette with it's Doug Nash 4 speed with electrically operated overdrive usable in 2nd, 3rd and 4thdidn't use all 7 most of the time! The Vette is not an 18 wheeler pulling a 40,000 pound load up hill!

I agree with JerryU about the cruise control. It's nice to be able to shift without having to re-engage.

Also for the question above about RPM in 7th. I have the Z51 option with lower gears, but I still only turn around 1,700 rpm at 70 in 7th. I imagine a 7-speed non-z51 is probably around 1,500-1,600 rpm at that speed.
Non Z51 in 7th @ 74 MPH is turning 1,350 RPM.

Yep the non Z51/Grand Sport 7th gear is 0.42:1 versus 0.48:1. The Z06 7th gear is 0.45:1. The first gear ratios are also all different!

All I know is that it "lugs" the engine quite a bit if you use seventh gear on anything but a long, straight highway where you are cruising at a very high speed (above 75 mph) and don't need a lot of "oomph" to pass other vehicles. Sixth gear is fine for my intents and purposes.......although I understand that others may have different driving habits. It's all good.

Regarding the C8, I cannot afford one - so whether it has a manual option is kind of irrelevant -- but I guess I am still kind of "old school" and have always preferred a manual transmission when available.

Again, to each his own.

I like 7th to 4th when exiting a freeway. Sometimes I'll downshift again to 3rd just to hear the engine. I have been using ARM for about a week and am surprised how good it is; I'm a fan.

My 2014 Z51 had no issues climbing a hill in 7th (and accelerating doing it) above 60. Did it all the time

Yeah, it can do it - but it just feels as though it is "lugging" the engine. A downshift to sixth or even fifth seems to get things done with a tad more oomph & gusto. But anyway, to each his own.

Your last two statements are contradictory. You say "you would not operate the engine" shifting at 17 mph. I would not either, but if you don't shift between 16-19 mph you don't need a skip shift eliminator and will never see a 1-4. All of my upshifts are made between 2.5-3K rpm when driving conservatively.

Ah yes, another area where we disagree! I would not drive an M7 without skip shift! They are now ~$15 and it's a simple unplug a connector and plug in the skip ship plug with a resistor that fools the computer into thinking it activated the blocking solenoid! Saw a gal in "All Girls Garage" TV install one, real time in about 1 minute! Granted it was already on a lift but I installed mine day one when switching to ceramic brake pads as had the car jacked up!

There are times when in fact I do shift in the "blocking range." When in bumper to bumper traffic and if in a mall going to the end of a parking lot etc! I don't think about my speed!

My wife tells me when to shift when she is a passenger, which fortunately is seldom as I MUST short shift! Don't need some computer telling me what to do!
