Default Coupe roof

Hi, just bought a C7, (it's my 4th vette,) and sure enuf just like clockwork, my coupe's top just started rattling and squeaking at about 15k miles. Both my c6 and c7 coupes did ther same thing. but not my convertible, it was more flexible I guess. It rattles and squeaks in the top left corner right above the deiver's head. any hacks or ideas how to stop the super annoying rattle ? a sponge? wd40? silicone? all and any ideas welcome. thanks. There is a replacement pin kit available at the dealer. Mine was replaced a couple years ago under warranty when I went in for an oil change. Believe it or not, no more squeaks or rattles, unlike my C6 that was almost constant.

Put Dielectric grease on all contact points, car and top, rubber and metal.

First check to see if you still have the rubber cone shaped bumpers on the front pins. I had one of them take a walkabout and it rattled like crazy. THey are about $3 at the dealer.

Second, check that the rear latch is adjusted properly.

David I had the same issue. In fact while driving, if I reach up above my head and stick my fingers in the opening the noise stops. The noise also seem to be migrating to the speaker housing behind the drivers seat. So I would hear it I thought in the speaker housing, but when I stuck my finger in the opening above my head the noise would stop. Brought to the dealer twice. Supposedly greased all the pins etc, no joy. Brought it in second time took off side panel to check out speaker area. I think he placed some foam back there. No joy. I decided not to bring it back for a third time thinking by taking the panels apart it would cause other rattles/squeakes. This is rinky dink, but I pressed some thick compressed foam up in the crack and it stopped the noise. This is temporary as I may try to take the roof off and reset. But not having the noise has been great. It really was driving me crazy. Just trying to isolate it.

thanks to all for your ideas,, Ill try some dielectric grease, if that doesn't work, Ill try sticking different types of some sponge like material and try different thickness until the maddening squeak is gone !

Dealer fixed mine while I waited - but they had to order the parts. It's common enough now many dealership's will have them in stock - work was done under warranty. You might do the old C4, C5, C6 trick first - silicone grease.

Our local dealer doesn't do Corvettes. Do you have a part number or service bulletin number that I can present to them?

Default Check Tightness of Rear Latch

Something easy you might try. I've found that the rear latch was set very loose on my C7. When you close the rear latch you should feel some resistance as you push the lever up and as it pulls the roof down. On my new C7 there was no resistance at all. If you feel some resistance this advice will probably not help.

To tighten it up, just unlatch the rear and the "J' hook will be down. You don't have to remove the roof. You need a small (1.5 mm I think) allen wrench to loosen the set screw that allows the "J" hook to rotate on it's screw threads. Push the "J" hook forward for a little more access, loosen the allen set screw (around 4 turns) and screw the "J" hook in one turn or until you feel some resistance when you engage the latch. That may solve your problem.

Just a quick question. Why "dielectric" grease? Why not silicone or some other kind of grease?

Also, take the J-hook plastic cover off (two torx screws), and spread the metal clips that hold it on. I also shoved a bunch of paper towel in mine, to tighten it up. It won't get wet, and you can't see it, and it has completely eliminated all rattles.

When they'll fix it under warranty, why would you want to shove a bunch of paper towels in yours? Just askin'.......

Because it takes some time to go to the dealer, articulate the problem, then wait for hours (or more) for some tech to tighten some bolts, and maybe fix it. I don't see this as a 'warranty' problem as much as just an annoying rattle than I can fix in a matter of minutes. Would some expanding foam make you feel better about it? Paper towel, foam, bubble wrap, whatever...I fixed the problem quickly, and permanently.

" When they'll fix it under warranty, why would you want to shove a bunch of paper towels in yours?" Maybe because some of us have learned the hard-way that our dealers' personnel cannot consistently find the top without our help, let alone "work" on it without screwing up something else.

EXACTLY. I'd expect that comment from a Ferrari owner. Hah!

Here's my 'home remedy paper towel job'....sure looks tacky, huh?

I have a roof exactly as you describe. My 2015 Stingray has been in the shop probably five time with NO RESULTS; it still rattles. They have replaced parts, adjusted what can be adjusted, greased the crap out of it, still it continues to rattle. They have told me that there is NOTHING THEY CAN DO. My C6 and C5 had a top problem, but it was fixed. I will continue to list it as a problem when I bring the car in for another complaint.
