Default A new VIR PB 1.59.4

With a little bit of coaching from Poorsha and some good weather I was able to set a new PB at VIR a 1.59.4 and backed it up with several more 1.59 laps.

I was at VIR Sun and Mon with Chin. We had great weather both days, a great opportunity to set a fast lap unlike the previous time at VIR in June when it was extremely hot.

My car is a 2017 z06 with stage 1 aero, m7 with cup2s. I changed the brake pads to raybestos st43. Everything else is stock. I did do the recommend track alignment.

The first video is one of my 1.59.4 laps.

The second video are a couple of 1.59 laps with slight traffic in the first lap.

I think I'm capable of a high 1.58 if I can get faster in turn 10 and not over low in turn 3.

Nice laps, fun to watch! Those ST43 pads are awesome. I wonder how much of a difference Stage 3 aero would make.

That is some great driving!

Congrats!

There are places that I am faster than you, especially coming out of T9 (you dropped an extraordinary amount of speed through the uphill esses), but you get to WOT at critical points quicker than I do (exit T1, T17), you also carry about 10 MPH more than me into the uphill esses (which takes stones). You are faster into T11 (I have been working on that but unwinding muscle memory is difficult). That you broke 2:00 on Cup 2's is astounding. Were they fresh tires?

This is great because it shows me where I can improve (if I ever get my car fixed). My PB thus far is a 2:06.3.

You can see my skid marks in T5b.

First, sorry to hear about your accident but glad you're ok.

Again, thanks to all for the kind words.

I'm probably over slowing in a few turns, which is why I believe a high 1.58 is doable for me.

T9 I'm not consistent, some laps my speed doesnt drop below 123 other laps I'm below 120.

if you want I can send you the file to compare the data if you like.

The cup2s only had one track day on them, yes, they were fresh. I came to the track with fresh brakes and tires.

Hi Hannah, let's discuss over beers.

The short answer is; it depends.

I was speaking to a NASA TT racer at an event and he was turning well under 2:00 in his GS. He passed me like I was going backwards. Granted he was on slicks and coil-overs and who knows what else...

If you are Mike Skeen or Randy Pobst, you could probably do sub 2:00 all day on a stock GS.

Since you are just starting out, a respectable time would be in the 2:20's.

The faster you go, the harder it becomes to drop time until you get to a point where you need someone like Peter Krause to help you find time.

Oh make no mistake, there is easily another second (likely several) based on the lap you shared. I can go into more detail, if you'd like, but I doubt I can offer better advice than Sean.

Oh and yes, please send or post your PDR file with the 1:59!

I have a long way to go to reach that 2:20. My best lap time was 2:36. It was the last lap in the second day. The event was over when I was about to learn the track. During the rain, I was around 3:00.... shameful

I wanted to register with PCA Carolinas next month, but no space for Green. I am considering TrackDaz next week, but that going to be 2 weekdays, and I am slammed at work.

I'm sure there is a lot more time to gain but I would be ecstatic to gain 1 second putting me in the 1.58s. Therefore I'm setting this as a goal for 2019. This was my 4th time at VIR and has become my favorite track.

Yes, Sean gave me a couple of things to work on, particularly braking and turn 3. Trying to focus on To many things starts to become a detriment.

Thanks for posting this. Awesome driving! I have been considering an upgrade to stage 2 aero, but clearly stage 1 aero isn't a limiting factor for hitting sub 2 minute lap times. Also, glad to see this level of performance from a non-Z07 car. Have you driven VIR on super sports?

I don't know about average, but my PB in a GS on super sports is 2:08.9. I started where you are, high 2:20s, then went to the Corvette Owner's School and dropped to 2:13. I was stuck at 2:13 until I did a ride-along with Newton06 which helped give me the confidence to push a bit harder. I think Poorsha did a 2:00 lap on super sports in a Z06. I've got a long way to go before the tires are holding me back.

Default Full PDR file

Below is the link to the full PDR file of the 1.59.4 lap for those who want to download and analyze the data.

I can post the link to the second video which has several 1.59 laps but the file is larger.

[QUOTE=grandsport2017;1598216102]Thanks for posting this. Awesome driving! Thanks

I have never driven VIR on super sports, only the cup2s.

I'm not convinced of the benefits of stage 2 or 3 aero over an entire lap, at least not at my level of driving. At a fast track like VIR, I would vote against stage 2 aero on a stock GS. A forum member here, Koan, has the stage 2 aero on his GS and I believe he would rather not have it.

As for a non Z07 car, I would like to see what kind of times Randy Pobst can turn seeing as he complains the Z07 cars are to stiff and cant put the power down well.
